Locum Consultant in Paediatric Haematology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and dynamic individual to apply for a post of Locum Consultant in Paediatric Haematology in one of the largest Acute Trusts in England. The predominant focus of this role will be to lead on non-malignant haematology including paediatric haemophilia and bleeding disorders or red cell haematology.

University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust provides acute and specialist paediatric services for Leicester and the surrounding hospitals in the South East Midlands including: nephrology, urology, allergy, congenital heart disease, endocrinology, ENT, gastroenterology, haematology, infectious diseases, neurology, NICU, oncology, paediatric surgery, PICU, and respiratory medicine.

Children’s services within UHL are undergoing a significant change with the plans underway for a bespoke Children’s Hospital at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site. Part of this new development has begun in 2021 with the relocation of East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre from Glenfield hospital to Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric, Teenage and Young Adult haematology/oncology inpatient unit is currently based on ward 27 at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The medical and nursing staff look after patients aged 0 to 25 years on the ward and within the adjacent haematology/oncology daycare and clinic area.

The paediatric haemoglobinopathy service runs a once monthly full day MDT clinic with trans-cranial Doppler facilities and a specialist nurse led clinic twice per month. Leicester is the regional Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre (HCC) for sickle cell disease and provides regional clinic support in Kettering and Northampton.
