This post will offer a unique opportunity in terms of speciality interests and service development. The post is based on 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week. Additional Programmed Activities may be available subject to service needs, e.g. participation on the on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work in collaboration with Consultant Physicians, Consultant Endocrinologists, the Diabetes Specialist Team and Primary Care Professionals to provide quality services for people with Diabetes.

The Trust and the Diabetes department have a robust programme for mentoring the new Consultant appointment.

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES OF THE POST

  • To have responsibility for ensuring a commitment to provide a high quality of Diabetes & Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine Services to patients by continual development of practice in the light of evidence-based, and clinical standards
  • To provide advice to colleagues in other specialities on diabetes and endocrinology problems
  • To provide a comprehensive outpatient service for Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine
  • To provide support for community diabetes team and primary care
  • To provide high quality inpatient diabetes service in collaboration with other colleagues and Diabetes Specialist Nurses
  • To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students and postgraduate medical education in general.
  • Educational and clinical supervision of trainees of the department along with other colleagues
  • To support and encourage audit and research
  • To actively participate in CME and personal development plans
  • 10 To participate in acute medical on calls (currently 1:19) and provide weekend morning ward rounds on a 1:4 basis

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full MRCP (or equivalent)
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) o CESR

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Diabetes & Endocrinology
  • A wide experience in Diabetes & Endocrinology
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.

MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff including SpR/StR level

Desirable

  • Evidence of management and administration experience

CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS

Essential

  • Experience of conducting clinical audit

Desirable

  • Evidence of research experience and published work

PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practice
