The post of Junior Clinical Education Fellow will work across Clinical Education and the Medical Care Directorate. This is a 12 month fixed term post working 50% WTE in education & 50% WTE in the medical care directorate, including pro-rata on-call commitments on the Tier 1 medical on-call rota.

The post offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated doctor to join dynamic, rapidly expanding teams delivering medical undergraduate education and clinical services across the Medical Care Directorate.

Due to the short term nature of the role/service demand, the successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC, must have completed a Foundation Equivalent Programme and must have existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application.

The successful candidate must have at least 6 months experience of working within the NHS and have a good understanding of UK medical undergraduate training.

Main duties of the job

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in the initial assessment and management of patients with the supervision of more experienced members of the team.

Liaise with other members of the clinical team and other specialties.

Advise Foundation trainees and ANPs about management of patients.

Develop skills in managing the wards to avoid unnecessary patient delays and maintain good clinical care to all patients.

Attend clinical educational opportunities where appropriate.

Maintain a portfolio of training and undertake an appraisal.

To participate in continuing professional development.

To participate in clinical audit and or quality improvement (QI) project.

Support medical and non-medical students within the ward area.

To comply with Trust policies and procedures, have (and maintain) GMC registration/licensing.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Develop a working understanding of research and education design methodology as it relates to Medical Education.

Undertake a needs analysis, review relevant literature, design and implement new forms of teaching delivery.

Contribute to University Fellow Network group learning exercises on the design and review of proposed educational development.

Enrol for ULTRA/FLTHE via The Academy at University of Liverpool (UoL) during first 6 weeks of Fellow post and apply through ULTRA/FTLHE for HEA accreditation by end of Fellow Year.

Enrol in University of Liverpool Faculty of Academic and Clinical Educators (FACE) and attend FACE CPD events in medical education and Learning Lunches hosted by the School of Medicine (expected attendance of a minimum of 20 hours in the year).

Complete, present or write up a development project during their year.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
  • Hold existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • Valid ALS certificate at the time of commencing post

Desirable

  • Higher qualification in Medical Education

Knowledge & Experience
Essential

  • Previous experience of working within the NHS
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of commencing post, in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
  • Competent to work without direct clinical supervision, where appropriate
  • Knowledge, interest and commitment to research, clinical audit and/or quality improvement.

Desirable

  • Held a previous teaching post or designated teaching role
  • Undertaken training or CPD related to teaching
  • Publication or presentation to a national or international audience

Skills
Essential

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate medical topics to patients and colleagues in a clear and sensitive way
  • Evidence of competence to manage medical emergencies and medical inpatients through continuous work based assessments, portfolio evidence, including log book documentation, if appropriate
  • Ability to organise and manage clinical priorities
  • Evidence of previous teaching experience
  • Previous presentation experience at regional level

Desirable

  • Ability to teach clinical skills, where appropriate.
