Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine - SDEC

37.5 hours per week - 10 Sessions

We are looking to recruit a Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine - Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) to join colleagues in a dynamic and highly supportive Department, based in Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen. Within this role there is an opportunity for consultants to develop specialist interests within the services that are relevant to same day care.

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure the provision and delivery of a high class Acute/General Medicine/SDEC service
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board's procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Health Board's service plans
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty or the Health Board
  • Core clinical expertise in Acute and General Medicine
  • Generic skills working with community colleagues
  • Experience and knowledge of running clinics
  • Leadership and team building skills, supporting and training multidisciplinary teams
  • Delivering care alongside primary health care and social care teams
  • Providing persuasive strategic advice to LHB's and Social Services Departments
  • Addressing the Intermediate Care Agenda
  • Participating in CPD including audit
  • You are expected to maintain your professional development and undertake annual appraisal for Revalidation
  • Teaching/Training Role for medical undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Educational Supervisor role to Junior and Middle Grade Medical Staff. Two middle-grade doctors are appointed to support the service and it is envisaged that two CT Doctors will join this service in the future. These doctors also take part in the on-call rota.
  • To undertake regular multidisciplinary clinical audit and provide evidence based medicine

  • Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills
  • Possession of MRCP (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g. MD; PhD; MSc
  • On Specialist Register/SpR due to obtain relevant CCT within 6 months of interview or CESR /equivalent

Clinical Experience
Essential

  • Broad based experience in General/Acute Medicine
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge and participation in CPD
  • Competence and expertise in Acute and General Medicine
  • Able to apply knowledge
  • Safe and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of communicating bad news
  • Meet the requirement of the GMC's Good Medical Practice

Desirable

  • Experience in the NHS
  • Wider experience, research and training in providing sub specialty service
  • Evidence of above average performance
  • Additional clinical qualification(s)
  • An interest in Acute Medicine

Clinical Governance
Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Comprehension of core philosophy and building blocks of Clinical Governance

Desirable

  • Knowledge of risk management
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process

Research
Essential

  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence so as to improve clinical outcomes

Desirable

  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication
  • Research degree

Teaching
Essential

  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff

Desirable

  • Evidence of management training
