Urgent & Emergency Care Services
Scarborough Hospital

Scarborough Hospital is undergoing a major new-build project to re-provide its Acute, Urgent and Emergency Medical facilities and we are looking for a new Clinical Director to lead our Urgent and Emergency Care Services.

After 5 years of bidding and numerous Business Case approvals, the go ahead has finally been given for a £47M upgrade of our hospital set in the heart of historic seaside town of Scarborough on the beautiful Yorkshire Coast.

The new facility is not a new A&E. It is a multi-function clinical space that enables the delivery of our innovative Acute Medical Model (AMM); a pioneering new approach to the delivery of urgent and emergency care.

AMM combines all of our “front door” services including ED, Resuscitation, Urgent care, Frailty, Same Day Emergency Care and overnight “short stay” into a single holistic, multi-disciplinary footprint.  With access to dedicated radiology and a purpose built, flexible working space that covers over 3000 sq metres, the AMM facility provides a once in a generation opportunity to adopt and promote a ‘working without walls’ across all major specialties.

Not only that, our new unit will house a state of the art Critical Care and Mewdical Level 1 space on the floor above and this, along with other major site improvements already underway, will transform acute care on the Yorkshire coast.  We serve the local population as well as the high numbers of holiday makers that flock to the east coast year after year.

More details on the extent of this extra-ordinary investment project that is now underway can be found at the link below:

As the Clinical Director, you will be overall in charge of the new AMM Facility and as such, you will be someone who is looking for a brand new challenge and have the extensive skills, experience and expertise to lead our rapidly expanding team to provide the highest quality care to our patients

You will need to be dynamic, motivated and ready pull together all the various strands of the “front door” functions, in particular, ensuring the integrated Urgent Treatment Centre and Same Day Emergency Care services knit seamlessly together. A keen eye for developing inter-personal relationships is also essential in order to maximise opportunities across specialties whether based here at Scarborough or delivered elsewhere.

Do not delay in getting in touch – we have already experienced a very high level of interest in the post!

Main duties of the job

Ideally, you will have a background in either Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine; either way your clinical duties will be delivered in the front door AMM environment.

You will be required to work closely alongside our Clinical Director responsible for  Ward Based Care to ensure the two main domains of the hospital are fully integrated. You will work very closely with the Care Group Director, deputising for them as required at various internal and external forums.

You must be able to demonstrate a high degree of Acute clinical experience but note that we are more keen to learn about your knowledge, skills and experience rather than be wedded to a particular specialty – it is your ability to lead a large team in the delivery of front door, unscheduled care that we are most interested in.

An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to process, reforms, initiatives & issues is essential along with the ability to work effectively in an environment of clinical and operational pressure.

Applicants must be able to prove that they have strong leadership qualities; can lead by example and have experience of working with others to successfully develop and deliver services. Being able to positively drive change; engaging with stakeholders from across organisations is essential as is resilience to see change through using evidence based techniques.  As a Teaching Hospital, we are also keen to see a commitment to the development of our people in order to build a sustainable future workforce.

You will also liaise closely with our other main site, The York Hospital, to develop the service on a pan-Trust basis as well as interact with partner providers and primary care to develop links with practitioners. across a range of sectors to fully embed the full suite of services that will be delivered in our new facility.

We see approximately 70000 non-elective patients annually and provide on-site services that cover the majority of medical and surgical services (with the exception of those usually provided at a tertiary centre). We have a well-equipped and very active postgraduate education department on site, and are involved in extensive training activities for students of all disciplines including Hull York Medical School.

We see the full range of patients at Scarborough, including children, and we have recently upgraded our helipad to enable use 24/7. We are a Trauma Unit and have links with the local Major Trauma Centre in Hull.

The clinical director role will attract 2PA and a standard responsibility payment of £8854 per annum. Please note the appointment term for clinical director part of the role is up to 3 years.

Where are we?

Scarborough was the country’s first seaside resort, and remains amongst the UK’s favourite and popular locations. We are on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and have excellent opportunities for outdoor activities, both on the water, on our beaches and inland. The town is well connected to the road and rail network with London being less than 3 hours away by train.
