Applicants should be on the Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine and or be within 6 months (from the interview date) of award of their CCT/CESR. Instructor status in ALS/ATLS/APLS is preferable and in date provider status is essential.

Main duties of the job

This is for a substantive Consultant post in Emergency Medicine at Frimley Park Hospital with the opportunity to work in Emergency Medicine at Wexham Park Hospital.

The Emergency Department at Frimley Park Hospital, which was rated as outstanding by CQC in 2014, delivers care to approximately 125,000 new patients a year. The Paediatric ED is open 24/7 and sees over 28,000 children a year. There are further proposed improvements to the ED having had a major improvement in 2012 with a new build. The department has a large Resus with 8 cubicles, 26 Majors cubicles and 2 Majors bays, a new 9 cubicle Ambulatory Area and a separate Paediatric ED co-located within the main ED. There is a helipad on the roof of the 2012 build to convey our sickest patients to and from ED.

About us

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust was established on the 1st October 2014. It has come about by the joining together of the two Foundation Trusts of Heatherwood & Wexham Park (established in 2007) and Frimley Park. Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust comprises of three sites:

  • Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, Berks
  • Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot, Berks
  • Frimley Park Hospital, Frimley, Surrey

In addition, there are outpatient and diagnostic facilities at St Mark's Hospital in Maidenhead, King Edward VII Hospital in Windsor, as well as within Bracknell Forest and the Chalfonts. The post-holder's responsibilities will be exclusively at the Frimley Park Hospital site.

There are 10 clinical directorates (Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and plastics, General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Specialist Surgery, Pathology, Radiology, Theatres and ITU) each of which has a Chief of Service, supported by an Associate Director and Head of Nursing. There is one Medical Director with two Deputies.

From June 2022 the Trust is extremely pleased to be moving to a full Electronic Patient Record system using Epic EPR.

Job description
Job responsibilities

The job plan will normally be based on a 10 PA contract, divided into 8 DCC and 2 SPA. The appointee will be based at the Frimley Park site with opportunities for cross-site working at our other ED in Wexham Park Hospital.

The appointee will be expected to join the annualised rota which allows greater flexibility to pursue other interests &/or help maintain a good work life balance. The DCC will be annualised at a rota meeting to provide ED shop floor cover from 0800-midnight, seven days a week. The weekend frequency is 1 in 6 weekends working either a day (08-17.30) or late (17.30-00.00 with on-call from home).

There are aspirations with additional ED Consultant numbers towards expanding the evening and weekend shift pattern in accordance with the RCEM workforce document. EM Consultant duties include leadership, supervision, education, mentoring, leading resuscitation teams and leading ED handover board-rounds.
