Wellington is a small, friendly, market town situated near Taunton, is close to the beautiful Blackdown Hills and offers a good quality of life. The town has good transport links being close to junction 26 of the M5 motorway and is well served by schools and sixth form colleges, both state and private, the latter including Wellington School.
The population of this area reflects the Somerset average mix of age and deprivation which give the practice a varied and interesting range of health issues to deal with.
Wellington Medical Centre, a well-established GP practice with a history dating back to the 1970s, is a stable, thriving, vibrant and sociable GP practice providing primary care services under a General Medical Services (GMS) contract.
We currently have 12 GP Partners and 1 Salaried GP.
The practice is semi-rural with a growing list size of over 15,500 patients drawn from Wellington and the surrounding area. The majority of patients live in Somerset although a small proportion live in the neighbouring county of Devon.
The practice provides services from a modern, spacious, purpose built premises owned by the GP Partners. Constructed in 2010 the premises are located in a parkland setting on the edge of the town of Wellington providing a pleasant working environment.
We are fortunate that the premises contains large training/conference facilities which, pre COVID, enabled us to provide a range of activities and support groups for patients which included exercise classes, patient participation group sessions, a carers’ support group.
The GP Partners are highly motivated, innovative and responsive to change. Mindful of increasing demand for primary care services and other potential developments which will impact on the provision of healthcare in Wellington including the substantial expansion of local housing and with a view to developing sustainable methods of working in recent years the GP Partners have expanded the existing team of clinicians with the employment of 2 Primary Care Practitioners (Paramedic trained), 2 Clinical Pharmacists and a Musculoskeletal Practitioner. In addition to the above our staff team includes 5 Practice Nurses and 4 Healthcare Assistants and a large Administrative Support Team.
Wellington Medical Centre is a training practice welcoming both GP Trainees and medical students. We were recently awarded an “Excellent” rating for our training activities.
Also within the medical centre we are very fortunate to have a team of Community Nurses and a team of Health Visitors. Regular clinics are also provided to our patient by the community Midwifery team.
Co-located on the Wellington Medical Centre site is a pharmacy leased by the GP Partners to Boots and an NHS Dental Access Centre leased by the GP Partners to Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
The Partners believe in providing the highest quality care to patients and work closely together with the whole staff team to deliver excellent service to our patient population. As a general philosophy the aim of the Partners and staff is to preserve the best elements of a traditional style of personal, friendly, accessible family medical practice based on team work, which can react quickly and sensitively to daily demands and to blend it with well-equipped premises and efficient systems for prevention and planned care of chronic conditions. The practice provides a comprehensive range of Primary Care services to its patients and the success of the practice is evidenced by its ability to attract new patients.
When inspected by the CQC in May 2018, the practice received a “Good” rating. The Practice achieves highly in relation to QOF.

The practice lies within the boundary of Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group. Information about Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group may be found at: http://www.somersetccg.nhs.uk/
The practice embraces technological advances. We use EMIS Web as our clinical software, and also for our appointments and workflow system. The Practice uses Patient Triage which is an online consultation system provided by AccuRx that patients can access and use, and we also use AccuRx video consultation, SMS messaging and batch messaging.
The practice is paper light with nearly all correspondence between the practice and local hospitals now taking place electronically. There is a practice intranet for all shared documents and resources. Further patient orientated initiatives include online access for appointment booking, ordering repeat prescriptions and accessing medical records, touch screen patient arrivals and a recently updated website.
Wellington Medical Centre is a member of Taunton Deane West Primary Care Network (PCN) which also includes our neighbouring practices, Luson Surgery (also located in Wellington) and Lister House Surgery in Wiveliscombe. Through the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) element of the Primary Care Network Directed Enhanced Service (DES), Taunton Deane West has employed a range of staff to work alongside the practices to fulfil the requirements of the DES which includes Pharmacists, First Contact Musculoskeletal Practitioners, a Complex Care/PCN Lead Nurse, a Care Co-ordinator, a Cancer Care Co-ordinator and through a contract with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust a number of Health Coaches. In addition to this the PCN also employs a Manager.
The PCN workforce plan going forward expands the range of roles employed to include Mental Health workers and Occupational Therapists.
