Job Details

Choose North Devon for a fulfilling career balanced with the outdoors life!

Applications are invited for a Consultant Anaesthetist post at North Devon District Hospital. This is offered on a whole-time basis (10.0PA) but suitably-qualified applicants unable to work full-time will be considered.

We are increasing our Consultant body to reduce on-call frequency, meet the demand on elective work and expand our well established pre-op clinic and ERAS work into the broader field of perioperative medicine. Additional specialist interests suitable to our hospital are also encouraged.

Our imminent merger with the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, implementation of electronic patient records and significant upgrades to our infrastructure using HIP2 funding will only increase further our ability to provide top level surgical outcomes.

Acute duties include adult and paediatric emergency and trauma Anaesthesia along with obstetrics, supported by an expanding cadre of SAS doctors. ICM has a separate rota and we provide mutual aid when needed.

The successful applicant will join an expanding team, currently consisting of 22 consultants, 14 SAS Anaesthetists, 11 Core / ACCS trainees and admin staff to provide comprehensive anaesthesia and critical care services for the population of North Devon.

Our clinicians maintain both specialist and generalist skills, balanced with an enviable outdoor lifestyle. The acute hospital is big enough to provide real opportunities for teaching, leadership, research and innovation, yet small enough to make prompt, effective changes, with an SPA allocation to match.

With the hospital being nestled between miles of golden beaches and Exmoor National Park, you’ll find our off-duty staff and their families surfing, kitesurfing, paddle boarding, swimming, running, cycling, sailing, playing golf, horse riding, walking, climbing and generally enjoying Devon life with good schools, rustic pubs and book clubs. See ‘#loveNDHT’ on YouTube for more.

This post is being offered as Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust continue to develop our long standing partnership with a view to becoming a single integrated organisation across Eastern and Northern Devon. Working together gives us the opportunity to offer unique and varied careers across our services combining the RD&E’s track record of excellence in research, teaching and links to the university with NDHT’s innovation and adaptability.

Whilst the post holder is formally being appointed to a role within the base hospital of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, over time there may be a need to provide some clinical activity in the partner hospital site to ensure service continuity and equity of access to appropriate services.

The Government has introduced, through legislation, regulations that will require most healthcare workers to be fully vaccinated (1stand 2nddose) against COVID-19 by 1st April 2022. To achieve this the successful applicant must have had their 1st COVID-19 vaccination by 3rd February 2022. Therefore, full COVID-19 vaccination will be a condition of employment unless an individual is medically exempt. We will ask for proof of vaccination during the recruitment process.
