Looking for a GP Principal

Due to impending retirement as a single-handed GP at Carradale Surgery, I am looking for an experienced GP to take over as the GP Principal.  Based in Carradale on the stunning east coast of Kintyre our rather unique remote and rural dispensing practice offers a modern, high standard of medicine while maintaining a traditional family doctor role.  This is a fantastic opportunity to take up a position in a very well-established practice in Argyll.  The practice list is about 590, but due to dispensing, geographical spread and a significant number of holiday visitors (generally March – November), the workload is much busier than this number suggests. Over 45% of the practice are aged over 65 and therefore care in the community and palliative care is extremely important.

Whilst this can be a clinically challenging job due to the remote & rural location, it is also for the same reason, one which is very interesting, enjoyable and rewarding and offers the opportunity to practice traditional family medicine from cradle to grave in an extremely beautiful part of the world.

The position provides an excellent work /life balance, working Monday to Friday (8.00 am to 6.00 pm), with no out of hours responsibility.

The ideal candidate should have previous experience of providing healthcare in a rural community, running a GP dispensary and be able to combine excellent clinical standards with patient-centred, holistic values as a community single- handed GP.

Current Staffing: We are a very friendly practice with an experienced clinical team of 1 GP, and 2 part time Practice Nurses (0.5 FTE); alongside dedicated and loyal Admin Staff and Dispensers, led by our experienced Practice Manager. Prior to Covid a physiotherapist visited fortnightly, and we have Health Board pharmacy support one session per week. Patients are referred to Glasgow, Oban or Campbeltown for outpatient appointments and hospital care.

The surgery team all work from the purpose-built Health Board premises in Carradale within Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership, part of NHSHighland. We are paperless using Vision, Mail Manager, MS Teams, Docman & Near Me.  Dispensing is an integral part of the Practice and we have Dispense IT software to allow the GP and staff to safely dispense when they are on their own.

The team is close knit and as well as our regular practice meetings, the GP and staff members frequently meet for lunch (Covid rules pertaining). The practice is consistently one of the top achievers in the region for screening programmes which is testament to the surgery team’s dedication and ethos.

The GP is the practice lead in the cluster group which meets with all practices (GMS and PMS) across Kintyre and Mid-Argyll for quality improvement as well as peer support. As we are an accredited training practice for undergraduate students from the University of Aberdeen and are passionate about demonstrating what a good option rural / single handed practice can be, an interest in teaching is welcomed, but not essential.

Being a small practice, we have the privilege to get to know our patients very well.  We have time to spend with our patients, offering 15-minute appointments in daily surgeries – whether by phone, NearMe or face to face (f2f). An additional 15 minutes is currently allocated to f2f appointments to cover Covid requirements.  Additional clinics are arranged as required. We carry out house visits when needed and we currently do all our influenza and baby immunisations as well as 6-8 week health checks and smears. Pre-covid we offered 3 yearly check-ups to all under 75 and annual check-ups to anyone over 75 yrs. The GP also offers minor surgery as an enhanced service.  Due to our location and time from hospital care being at least a 30-minute drive, the GP is BASICS trained in pre- hospital care for trauma and medical emergencies.

The Practice has an active Patient Group with a very supportive community. You will have patients who will truly appreciate your skills, reflected in the consistently high patient satisfaction statistics. Carradale also has a Scottish Ambulance Service Community First Responder Group which would be benefit from continued GP leadership/participation.

A Little About East Kintyre

Carradale is on the stunning west coast of Scotland, situated on the east side of the Kintyre Peninsula (overlooking Arran).

Kintyre offers the outdoor enthusiast a huge variety of activities. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, golden sandy beaches, hills, lochs, several golf courses, variety of water sports, photography, archaeology, wildlife, vibrant music culture, seafood, gin and whisky distilleries, and the relaxing atmosphere which the area has to offer.

There are unique benefits to living in Kintyre. The weather here can be glorious with amazing sunrises, and although it can be a bit wet through the winter months, our rainfall is generally less than the rest of the west of Scotland – we even have palm trees thanks to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream.

Carradale has its own community shop, post office, primary school, garage, golf course, restaurants, tea rooms and hotels, however Campbeltown (15 miles away) has 2 good-sized supermarkets (Tesco and Coop), and a wide range of independent shops/cafes/restaurants.

Glasgow is 3 hours by road. There are twice daily, 30-minute flights from Glasgow to Machrihanish Airport. A summer Calmac car ferry service from Ardrossan to Campbeltown has now been established as a long-term sea link to Kintyre. The islands of Arran, Islay, Jura and Gigha are all easily accessible by other nearby ferry routes. Kintyre Express also operates regular passenger only services from March to September to Ballycastle on the Antrim Coast and Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay
