Applications are invited for a locum Medical Oncologist to join our friendly team of consultants on a 10PA contract.

The successful candidate will join existing a multidisciplinary teams in the field of Gastro-Intestinal, including hepatobiliary cancers, Acute Oncology and Cancers of Unknown Primary.

The successful candidate will also build on the existing good working relationships that exist with all departments across the trust and within the multidisciplinary teams, providing inpatient and outpatient management for patients, and to participate in the associated teaching and research programmes.

They will need to demonstrate professional excellence and the ability to deliver effective care. They will be required to adhere to the Trust's policy on maintaining medical excellence and to be committed to maintaining their standard of performance by keeping their knowledge and skills up to date.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and high quality evidence-based Medical Oncology service, with continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

Leadership, development and organisation of the services in his/her charge in line with Trust / Divisional business plans. Full participation in the management of the Barts Cancer Centre (BCC).

Liaison and communication with the BCC Divisional Director and General Manager and with the Deputy Director of Operations.

To develop his/her own interests and specialities within oncology, including active participation in research programmes.

To have corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.

To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in the NHS Cancer Plan, the Improving Outcomes reports and National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance reports.

To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, community services, and all healthcare agencies.

To maintain and promote team and multidisciplinary work

Job responsibilities

The postholder will play an active role in supporting the post-take review of those cancer patients admitted to Barts Hospital via the Clinical Assessment Unit.

The postholder will give advice and guidance to clinicians and patients on acute oncological care planning. They will facilitate and establish effective communication pathways and record keeping ensuring those involved in the patients care are informed regarding emergency presentations and actions taken.

To provide, with colleagues, day to day care and supervision of oncology inpatients as part of the multi-disciplinary team.

The postholder will give advice and guidance to clinicians and patients on acute oncological care planning. They will facilitate and establish effective communication pathways and record keeping ensuring those involved in the patients care are informed regarding emergency presentations and actions taken.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration/ or entry into the specialist register
  • MRCP/ FRCP or evidence of equivalent qualification and/or experience
  • CESR

Desirable

  • Higher research degree (MD, PhD, MD (Res))
  • Accredited Educational Supervisor
  • Other qualifications which might enhance the provision of the service e.g. Teaching qualification, management qualification

Experience
Essential

  • Have experience in the management of resources
  • Broad based knowledge of and understanding of Medical Oncology, including chemotherapy and the principles of palliative care
  • Experience of teaching a variety of styles and to various audiences
  • Able to take responsibility of service without direct supervision

Desirable

  • Excellent publication record

Knowledge
Essential

  • Specialist knowledge in the management of gastrointestinal malignancies
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems
