This position is open to applicants who have completed their CCT or equivalent.

The post is for twelve months.

We are looking to recruit a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow in Medical Education. The aim of this post is to help coordinate and deliver medical education to undergraduate medical students from Queen Mary University London and ARU Medical School at our main site, Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow. The post holder will also help support and mentor the Clinical Teaching Fellows in the Medical Education Department. In addition the successful applicant will be supported in their personal educational development and encouraged to seek opportunities of further postgraduate qualifications in this area.

Main duties of the job

On a day to day basis it is expected that the post holder will have a fixed schedule of varied teaching activities in the trust including overseeing the junior fellows.

These activities and responsibilities can be broadly split into:

  1. Familiarisation of the QMUL and ARU medical schools' curricula
  2. Coordination of weekly teaching programs for medical students, including liaising with consultants, SAS and junior doctors and the wider educational team
  3. Small group teaching


In particular the delivery of problem based learning to 3rd yr students

 

  1. Formal didactic lectures


The delivery of established programme of lectures and tutorials to the 5th yr students.

 

 

  1. Bedside teaching and mentoring schemes


Running a programme of mentoring for the students and facilitation of bedside teaching using the junior fellows and other employees of the trust

 

 

  1. Simulation


Working with the Simulation & Clinical Skills Lead and their deputy, and dependant on experience the delivery and development of simulation training and virtual reality simulation in undergraduate education

 

 

  1. E learning forum activities
  2. Clinical skills teaching and examination practice


Planning and delivery of regular clinical skills training to all student groups and the delivery of mock OSCE examinations.

 

 

  1. Development and delivery of online teaching.
  2. Assisting with educational activities at QMUL/ARU, such as student interviews and student examinations.

Person Specification
Meets Essential & Desirable criteria
Essential

 

  • MBBS (MBChB) or equivalent
  • Completion of specialty training (any specialty, including General Practice) by the time the post is due to commence and be on the specialty register
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at the time of applying

Desirable

  • Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters in Medical Education
  • Completion of clinical and/or educational supervisor training

  • Prior experience in the organisation and delivery of medical education, especially at undergraduate level
  • Prior experience delivering and facilitating face-to-face high fidelity simulation training
  • Prior experience in delivering and facilitating bedside teaching, case-based or problem-based learning, clinical skills teaching and (mock) OSCEs
  • Ability to present effectively to the student audience using a variety of teaching methods.
  • Prior experience of clinical supervision of medical students

Desirable

 

  • Prior experience of mentoring of medical students and/or junior doctors
  • Experience in a previous teaching fellow post
  • Prior experience of medical education research
