CONSULTANT MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY / JOINT  INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND MICROBIOLOGY (10 PAs)

The Great Western Hospital is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Consultant Medical Microbiologist or joint Infectious Diseases/ Microbiologist to join our team. This is a 10 PA replacement post. Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues. This is a substantive appointment.

The post holder will participate in providing a comprehensive clinical, laboratory, diagnostic and consultative microbiology and infection control service to the Great Western Hospital to join the existing team of three consultants in providing clinical microbiology services to Swindon and the surrounding area.

The Great Western Hospital is located on the outskirts of Swindon, just off junction 15 of the M4. There are excellent transport links. The cities of Oxford, Bristol, Bath and Cheltenham are all within an easily commutable distance. There is a mainline train service to London, which is an hour away. Swindon itself is a rapidly expanding town, with good local amenities. There are beautiful surrounding villages and countryside offering the opportunity to live in the Marlborough Downs, Thames Valley or Cotswold districts. With the accessibility to commuting there are a wide range of excellent state, grammar and independent schools across the area.

The Great Western Hospital provides comprehensive clinical and laboratory microbiology services to a population of 350,000.

The Great Western Hospital opened in 2002 and has been a Foundation Trust since December 2008.  Following a merger with Wiltshire Community Health Services (WCHS) in June 2011 the Trust has provided not only acute hospital services but also a range of community health services in Wiltshire. Since 1 July 2016, Wiltshire Health and Care have provided community healthcare services for adults in Wiltshire, after being selected by Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) as their chosen provider for at least the next five years. Wiltshire Health and Care is a new partnership formed between Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust and Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GWH) employs over 5,500 staff providing acute hospital services at the Great Western Hospital (catchment population of c344K) and community health services across Wiltshire as part of Wiltshire Health and Care.  The latter includes community hospitals, community nursing and therapists.

At the Great Western Hospital we have all of the facilities you would expect to find in a busy general hospital including an Emergency Department, a delivery suite, a full range of diagnostic tests such as X-ray, MRI and CT scans, outpatient clinics and twenty one inpatient wards. We provide these services in a modern environment ensuring patients have privacy and dignity throughout their care. There is access to a PET CT scanner off site

The appointee, together with consultant colleagues, will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and cost-effective clinical Microbiology, Virology and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) service to the Trust and other users of the service.

The successful applicant will be an NHS employee and may therefore have contact with vulnerable service users. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been necessary to take significant steps to protect the health and safety of our staff, service users and those attending our sites. In order to comply with our duty of care, government guidelines require our staff to have the COVID vaccine and we will ask for proof of vaccination during the recruitment process. Vaccination will be a condition of employment unless an exemption applies.
