The Great Western Hospital is pleased to be able to offer the opportunity to Consultant Geriatricians to join the existing team within the Department of Older Person’s Services (DOPS) to enhance and drive forward the ongoing development of our service.
Are you looking to start your career as a Consultant in one of the most supportive and caring Elderly Care Trusts in the country, or are you an existing Consultant looking for a new and exciting change where you can really make a difference? Either way, we are a supportive and close knit team who are focussed on giving the very best care to our elderly patients at all times and we would love to have you on board.
We are looking for enthusiastic and forward thinking Consultant Geriatricians to help shape the service that we deliver in the care of our elderly patients who we care so passionately about. We are continually looking to develop new ways of working so we are excited to see what additional ways of working and practices the potential candidates can bring to the team to further enhance the service we provide. We encourage professional development, so candidates with special interests within Geriatrics will be accommodated and supported as much as possible.
The successful candidate will be working closely with the existing team of Consultants to design pathways to improve the care we provide in our acute setting. We believe that this is essential for us to provide a first class service where the patients and their relatives come first.
The DOPS team are well located in the Betjeman Centre, which is on the ground floor of GWH. This is home to the department’s outpatient clinic rooms, day hospital, therapy centre and office space for the Consultant team and their secretarial support. The team manage Acute & Orthogeriatric inpatients on Jupiter, Woodpecker, Teal and Trauma wards at The Great Western Hospital. There is also a rehabilitation service for Orthogeriatric and Stroke, which is provided by SWICC in a separate building, located on site at GWH. We currently provide specialist elderly care services on site for Stroke, Falls, Syncope, Orthogeriatrics and Movement Disorders.
There are currently 19 consultants participating in the 1 in 7 General Medical on call rota. We believe that a good work/life balance is important for all our employees so we would like the appointed candidates to participate in this rota to enable us to reduce the frequency of this commitment for all.
Candidates are required to be within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview or currently hold CCT or equivalent. As such the post holder should be trained in all aspects of General Medicine, special interests are encouraged and will be supported as much as possible.
About The Great Western Hospital
GWH is a hospital that is on the up. There has been significant investment and development in the Trust, with work recently starting in the construction of a Radiotherapy Centre, which means that patients will no longer need to travel to Oxford for treatment. This represents a huge milestone for the Trust and, more importantly, improving levels of care for our patients. Additionally, we have been successful in securing £15m to improve urgent and emergency care at GWH by replacing the current Urgent Care Centre with a new Urgent Treatment Centre. This is in addition to our successful bid for £30m to expand and improve services as part of our Way Forward Programme.
About Swindon, Wiltshire and The Cotswolds
Swindon is a thriving town set between the Cotswolds to the North and West, the Upper Thames valley to the East and the Marlborough Downs to the South. London, Bristol and Oxford are all within easy reach, approximately one hour by car with good links by public transport. The rail journey to London Paddington from Swindon is approximately 55 minutes and Heathrow Airport is only an hour away from Swindon by car. Heading west by train, and Bristol, Bath and Cardiff are all within an hour’s travel.
There are beautiful villages with excellent housing in the surrounding rural areas of Wiltshire, the Cotswolds and Marlborough. Marlborough is a bustling market town located in Savernake Forest only 10 miles away from the Great Western and offers a variety of housing and renowned educational institutions. Cirencester, capital of the Cotswolds, is only twenty miles away with great amenities and picturesque surroundings.
Swindon itself boasts easy access to The Ridgeway, which is popularly known as Britain’s oldest road. Starting from the World Heritage Site at Avebury, and home of the Avebury Stone Circle, it stretches northeasterly across the chalk hills for 87 miles, reaching Ivinghoe Beacon to the northwest of London. The Ridgeway still follows the same route used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers. Today it is popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and horse riders.
To the north of Swindon, the Cotswold Water Park and lakes can be found, which covers over 40 square miles and 170 lakes, with many different leisure providers located here. Lodges are available to rent by the lakes and there are an abundance of water based activities to indulge in, as well as being a prime location for watching and enjoying the wildlife that the lakes support.
