Applications are invited for a consultant post in Clinical Genetics and Genomic Medicine.

This exciting new post will be based in the Clinical Genetics Department at Great Ormond Street Hospital within the North East Thames Regional Genetics Service.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with a passion for genomic medicine to help drive the development of genomic medicine services and contribute to our Clinical Genetics team.  

We are advertising a full time 10 PA post. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with laboratory colleagues to promote genomics and have an opportunity to develop a specialist interest that complements the expertise currently within the service. The postholder will have a full clinical commitment and will be expected to take an active role in the programme of audit, clinical governance, teaching and research within the department.

Main duties of the job

Deliver clinical genetics care and advice to population of North East Thames Regional Genetics service through clinics held at Great Ormond Street and contribute to the assessment of ward patients
Help with follow-up of patients and referrals and correspondence into the department

Take a share of the daily consultant rota to review GP and other referrals, including urgent referrals, acute clinical problems and unbooked patients.
Support Genomic Medicine clinics for deep phenotyping of patients identified in research studies and requiring clinical genetic input, and feedback of results from genomic studies offering cascade testing and prenatal testing to parents and relatives where appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Work closely with the North East Thames Regional Genetics Lab at GOSH to offer clinical input to the interpretation of genomic variants and to provide clinical input to reports, liaising with clinicians from other specialties as well as the current clinical genetic team where appropriate
Support genetics and genomics education across the Trust by teaching on courses, such as the QMUL Counselling in Genomic Medicine MSc module and other mainstreaming educational activities

Play an active role in supporting research and development in the Clinical Genetics service

Provide advice and supervision as appropriate for genetic counsellor led clinics and contribute to the teaching of specialist trainees, others training in conjunction with our service and visitors to the department

Take part in clinical genetics departmental activities including weekly clinical meetings, journal club, seminar series and audit

Essential criteria

Full GMC specialist Registration (obtained by designated start date)
MBBS or Equivalent

On specialist register for Clinical Genetics (CCT or equivalent), or within 6 months of award of CCT by date of interview, or evidence of eligibility for the GMC specialist register

Accredited to and member of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
Research/Publications/Presentations of relevance to clinical genetics
Desirable criteria

Higher Degree or equivalent qualification or research experience
Management qualification

Area of specialist expertise within Clinical Genetics
Qualification in Medical Education

Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria

Experience of teaching including to a variety of learner backgrounds and size of audience

Evidence of basic molecular genetic knowledge and its application to clinical molecular genetics and genomics

Evidence of involvement in the clinical audit process

Clinical Governance Experience

Prior knowledge in General Paediatric or Paediatric specialist or Clinical Genetics or Adult specialty area including Neurology, cardiology, ophthalmology

Previous exposure to clinical research and knowledge of research design and method

Ability to initiate papers and abstracts for conferences and to present material arising from research
