WANTED: A Clinical Microbiologist who wants to join the RAF

The Royal Air Force spans the world. We support troops on the front line, fly in humanitarian aid for the sick and starving, police the skies and defend the UK airspace.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Medical Officers (Clinical Microbiologists) play a vital role in ensuring personnel are fit and ready for action in the UK and when deployed on Operations overseas.

A rare opportunity has arisen where we are seeking to recruit to this unique role and are looking for motivated individuals with a CCT, (or within 6 months of CCT) in Medical Microbiology or Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, and hold FRCPath, who are looking for new challenges. Your role is pivotal in maintaining the effectiveness of the RAF in delivering Air Power.

You will form part of a team that provides clinical advice to colleagues in both UK and overseas locations and will work closely with Biomedical Scientists to deliver the highest quality care for patients in operational deployments.

This will include the introduction of novel technologies including far forward Point of Care testing, coupled with enhanced reach-back capability for clinical support. Close working with both military and civilian colleagues across multiple professional areas is a key component of the role, and good communication skills are essential.

The role will encompass challenges posed by the diagnosis and management of New and Emerging Infectious Diseases in overseas locations, coupled with Infection Prevention and Control in aircraft including the transportation of patients with High Consequence Infectious Diseases.

On top of a competitive salary, consistent support and exceptional training, we offer a structured and progressive career path designed to encourage and reward excellence. The RAF is a strong advocate of continuous professional development; this will include various types of on-going professional training to ensure your continued registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).

Research activities in relevant areas are strongly encouraged and there are opportunities to develop and take on leadership roles in RAF and Defence as Consultant Advisor in Pathology or academic research. As a RAF Medical Officer, you will undertake specialist training in aviation medicine and occupational health specific to a military setting.

BENEFITS OF AN RAF CAREER

  1. Six weeks of paid holiday each year
  2. Free health and dental care
  3. Free gym membership and access to fitness classes.
  4. Lower rental costs than the UK average (available for RAF accommodation on and off-base)
  5. Opportunities for Adventurous Training.

RESIDENCY AND NATIONALITY REQUIREMENTS

You must be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, holder of dual UK/other nationality or have been a Commonwealth citizen since birth. Whether or not you were born in the United Kingdom, you should have resided there for the 5 years immediately preceding your application, but candidates with a minimum of 3 years will be considered.

A MODERN FORCE

The RAF recognises the value of a person’s ability no matter their ethnicity, social background, religion or belief, gender identity, sexual orientation or marital status/civil partnership.
