University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is looking for highly motivated and skilled consultants in Paediatric Haematology. This is a replacement post which will enhance the current establishment of NHS and academic staff of the Leicester Children’s Hospital. We are one of the biggest and busiest NHS Trusts in the country, serving the one million residents of Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, as well as providing highly specialist services to the population of our neighbouring counties and beyond.

The paediatric malignant haematology service treats all haematological malignancies except for infants with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, acute myeloid leukaemia, and allogenic stem cell transplants. The paediatric oncology service at Leicester Children’s hospital treats all solid tumours, and carries out the initial work up of children referred with suspected malignant diagnoses. Children with Retinoblastoma and primary bone tumours have biopsy, strategic management, and definitive surgery at supra-regional units, but all chemotherapy and local support for these patients is managed within Leicester Children’s Hospital.

We aim to recruit all eligible patients to clinical trials. The Clinical Trials team manage the trial portfolio to facilitate this.

The Paediatric Haematology/Oncology Unit is based on ward 27 at Leicester Royal Infirmary with the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Unit adjacent to it. The nursing and medical staff care for patients from 0 to 25 years of age.

Patients requiring high dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue currently go to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for their harvests and returns. Children are transferred back to Nottingham for ongoing inpatient care following stem cell return.

Our primary purpose is to provide ‘Caring at its Best’, and our staff have helped us create a set of values that embody who we are and what we’re here to do. This means:

We focus on what matters most. We treat others how we would like to be treated. We are passionate and creative in our work. We do what we say we are going to do. We are one team and we are best when we work together

Our patients are at the heart of all we do, and we believe that ‘Caring at its Best’ is not just about the treatments and services we provide, but about giving our patients the best possible experience. That’s why we’re proud to be part of the NHS and we’re proud to be Leicester’s Hospitals.

The applicants must already be on the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of the interview date have a certificate of completion of specialist training.
