Consultant careers in Manx Care on the Isle of Man

Are you a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care? Join our team on the beautiful Isle of Man, where we are aiming to become the best small Island based health and care system!

If you would like to achieve a fantastic work-life balance with a professionally satisfying job, then this could be the job for you!

About Noble’s Hospital and Service

By joining us you will be stepping away from NHS pressures and demands, as the Island’s healthcare system is similar but separate to the UK NHS.

You will be based at Noble’s Hospital, a modern general district hospital on the outskirts of the Islands’ capital, Douglas.

The Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Service provides anaesthetic services for all the major specialties (excluding neuro and cardiac surgery). There are six main operating theatres with a ten bedded recovery room. The Department also provides a consultant-led hospital pain service. The Maternity Unit has a dedicated obstetric theatre and an obstetric epidural service is also provided. Maternal requests for epidural analgesia are granted whenever possible.

The post is principally based in the Intensive Care Unit. A six bedded unit (2 level 3, 4 level 2). There is access to Hamilton C6 ventilators and Phillips monitoring. Two CVVHDF machines are available with access to a renal dialysis unit. The expected work pattern is 1:4 weeks of ICU, Monday to Friday 0800 to 1800 with on-call in the other weeks. A small number of theatre sessions and on call complete the PA allocation. On-call is currently transitioning to a combination of resident and non-resident duties to support flexibility in working.

The Island provides an air ambulance service for the transfer of critically ill patients to the UK, and you will have the opportunity to participate in this service and provide in flight anaesthetic support during transfer, with the appropriate training. The medical lead for the air ambulance service is a consultant anaesthetist.

What can this role offer me?

You will also have access to the fantastic training and development facilities we have, including an onsite training centre and simulation suite. We recognise the need for all medical staff on the Island to maintain connections with medicine in the United Kingdom, and we provide generous study leave with pay and expenses to attend approved conferences and workshops.

About the Island and relocating

opportunities for outdoor activities; so if you like walking, mountain biking, sailing or kayaking, you’ll have lots of
places to explore! There are also lots of great cafes, bars and restaurants, and you can enjoy the Island’s real sense of community. The island is well connected to the UK, and you’ll also benefit from low income tax rates (20% maximum rate).
