The Department of Anaesthesia provides a full range of anaesthesia services for the surgical specialties at Lincoln County Hospital, the Obstetric Unit, the Intensive Care Unit, the Accident & Emergency department, the Radiology department and the on site Department of Psychiatry and provides anaesthesia services to Louth.

The Main Theatre Unit consists of ten operating theatres and separate adult and paediatric theatre recovery areas. There are two Day case theatres in the Obstetric/Gynaecology wing as well as an obstetric theatres located in the Delivery Suite. The Intensive Care and Day Case Units are located next to the Main Theatre Unit.

The department is comprised of 31 consultant anaesthetists, two associate specialists and 12 specialty doctor anaesthetists. In addition there are currently sixteen trainees each of whom rotates either from Nottingham or Leicester Schools of Anaesthesia. There are also three physicians assistants in anaesthetics.

There are separate Consultant ITU and General Anaesthesia on-call rotas. Eight Consultants have a specialist interest in Intensive Care. There are designated lead clinicians in all major subspecialties and day care surgery, preoperative care, postoperative care and difficult airway management. There are Consultant lead clinicians for clinical audit, clinical governance, medical equipment, duty rostering and paramedic training.

About the Role

The Trust is committed to the provision of a high quality, consultant led service. The Appointee will be expected, in conjunction with his/her colleagues, to provide a comprehensive Anaesthetic service to ULHT.

The post holders duties will be primarily at Lincoln County Hospital, Lincolnshire, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trusts locations or outreach district general hospital clinics.

In addition he/she will be required to:

  • Undertake such other duties as may be identified to meet the needs of the service.
  • Take part in 1:17Consultant weekday night and weekend on call and to provide, on a reciprocal basis, emergency cover for colleagues during periods of absence.
  • Have continuing responsibility for patients in his/her care and for the proper functioning of the department.
  • Take part in team, department audits.

The post holder will be expected to partake in teaching activities for junior doctors in training and medical students.

The Job Plan and duties will be reviewed and updated on a regular basis in line with demands of the service.

Person Specification

  • Full GMC Registration
  • FRCA or equivalent


  • Higher training in emergency/trauma anaesthesia
  • Vascular/Obstetrics/Paediatric


  • All round clinical experience, knowledge, skills and training appropriate to a District General Hospital and equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in Anaesthesia
  • CCT / CESR


  • UK anaesthetic experience
  • Knowledge of IT
  • Experience of and commitment to teaching


  • Personal Integrity
  • A commitment to service development and to the flexibility that is required to meet the changing needs of ULHT
  • Compliance with appraisal, job planning and revalidation. A commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Ability to be an effective team member/leader, and to relate effectively with professional colleagues
