The appointee will join an enthusiastic and friendly department of Acute Medicine which is an integral part of the Division of Medicine at the QEH.

Main duties of the job

To ensure the continued delivery of high-quality care to patients within the trust and to contribute to the further development of the Acute Medicine service.To further develop clinical knowledge and skills in Acute Medicine to aid preparation for working as an Acute Medicine consultant.

The training opportunities will mirror those given to Specialist Trainees with support from departmental teaching, career development, training budget, Quality Improvement Projects (QIP), participation in Outpatient elective activity and allocation of a clinical supervisor to support career development. Advanced Life Support (ALS) can also be organised at the trust but is desirable to have before starting.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Clinical
  • To provide rapid assessment of acute medical patients.
  • To maintain effective communication and handover to the on-call team.
  • To support emergency services, liaising with other departments including Accident & Emergency and developing speciality teams and fast-track services
  • Participate in the on-call rota on an equal basis with colleagues to ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out-of-normal working hours.
  • Work autonomously as a senior decision maker within the Ambulatory Emergency Care/Same Day Emergency Care unit.
  • Ensuring ALS qualification is up to date and ability to lead a cardiac arrest.
  • Supervise and support junior clinical and paramedical colleagues in the delivery of clinical care, demonstrating strong leadership and professionalism.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.
  • Work with colleagues to ensure effective management of inpatients, internal referrals, outpatient clinics and investigational sessions.
  • To be able to perform emergency procedures, such as lumbar puncture, ascitic drain and chest drains. Training can be provided around procedural competencies.

Organisational
  • To provide support for the effective development of the service.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To further develop clinical protocols, guidelines, and concise care bundles.
  • To carry out responsibilities with due regard to the Trusts Equal Opportunities Policy.
  • To be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff and attend all relevant health and safety training.
  • To ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard.
  • To carry out annual performance reviews with each member of their staff.
  • To attend all relevant management training in health and safety, risk assessment etc.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP (UK) Part 1 and Part 2 or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) or be in the process of acquiring within a grace period of starting.
Experience
Essential
  • Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council.
  • At least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in Acute Medicine or as a fixed term specialty trainee in Acute Medicine; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Competence and expertise in Acute and General medicine
Experience
Essential
  • Management of medical admissions at ST3+ level
  • Advanced procedural competences, such as chest drains, ascitic drains and lumbar punctures.
  • Evidence of supervision or training of junior doctors.
