These posts provide services to the Theatres, Anaesthetics and Critical Care Clinical Business Unit in both Huntingdon and Peterborough, with the majority of the work at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon. The posts have been created to provide a middle grade tier for the critical care unit at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. Hinchingbrooke Healthcare NHS Trust and Peterborough & Stamford NHS Foundation Trust merged on 01 April 2017 to form the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicants will join a team of 40 anaesthetists in Hinchingbrooke, including 6 new posts. The post is advertised on the basis of 10 PAs and any additional PAs will be subject to negotiation. The appointee will take part in the resident middle grade ITU on-call rota in Hinchingbrooke. The post-holder will be responsible to the Clinical Lead for Critical Care and accountable to the Chief Executive.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will participate in a rota providing resident middle grade cover to the critical care unit on weekdays, and on nights seven days a week. The remainder of the contracted hours will be spent in elective theatre lists and undertaking supporting professional activities. Further development of specialist interests will be supported through study leave (30 days per 3-year cycle).

Critical care duties are organised on a rolling 1:8 rota. Elective lists are programmed into the 8-week cycle.

Job responsibilities

The new middle grade ITU tier will provide support to the consultant anaesthetist in charge of critical care with shift times of 08.30-21.00 and 20.30-09.00. A separate tier of specialty doctors provides cover on a 1:10 rolling rota, for emergency theatres and obstetrics.

On-call duties are shared with prospective cover for leave. The consultant anaesthetists are currently resident in the hospital whilst on-call and the whole of this time is treated as working time. Consultants are responsible for critical care, obstetric and general emergencies, supported by a speciality doctor. The emergency work is covered in 12.5 hour shifts 08.30-21.00 and 20.30-09.00. The night and weekend rota operates on a 1:14 basis. Weekday critical care long days (08.30-21.00) are covered by consultants with a critical care interest. Plans are under consideration for a different model of consultant on call in the future.
