Edition Editor/Deputy Editor, Archives of Disease in Childhood: Education & Practice

Archives of Disease in Childhood: Education & Practice edition (E&P) is seeking an Edition Editor to lead the E&P editorial team. 

Reporting to the Archives of Disease in Childhood (ADC) Editor-in-Chief, Dr Nick Brown, the Edition Editor will lead the E&P editorial team and serve as a Deputy Editor for the ADC suite. 

E&P is a peer-reviewed journal that specialises in supporting paediatricians' education and training needs. It forms part of the ADC suite, alongside the general ADC and the Fetal & Neonatal (F&N) edition (https://ep.bmj.com/). 

The ADC journals are co-owned by BMJ and the Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health. All articles are published online and there are six printed issues per year. 


  • Providing the highest possible quality content for readers around the world
  • Managing the performance of the associate editors, providing support and advice where necessary and overseeing their development
  • Building a supportive team of associate editors, including responsibility for appointments (subject to Editor-in-Chief approval)
  • Managing approaches from prospective authors
  • Maintaining the integrity of the peer review process, providing guidance to authors and reviewers as appropriate
  • Commissioning articles
  • Ensuring an appropriate copy flow of papers to publication through the ScholarOne submission system
  • Suggesting new article types and areas of focus
  • Selecting the content for each print issue and writing an introduction
  • Contributing to and executing journal strategy
  • Advising the Editor-in-Chief and publisher on journal development and contributing to discussions on overall ADC strategy 
  • Attending the annual ADC editors’ meeting
  • Promoting the journal and acting as an advocate and ambassador for E&P and its content
  • Depending on experience/areas of expertise, the Edition Editor may be consulted on content from the other editions

The roleholder should anticipate a considerable degree of independence once settled into the role. 


  • Consultant/Attending or equivalent senior clinical position in general paediatrics or a subspecialty
  • Postgraduate teaching experience 
  • Research experience
  • Experience writing and/or editing educational content
  • Leadership skills
  • Familiarity with the conventions of peer review
  • Desirable: social media skills

This is an independent contractor position. The initial term of office will be four years. The Editor-in-Chief welcomes applications from anywhere in the world. Applicants do not need to be members of the RCPCH or BMA. To ensure a smooth transition it is envisaged that the new Edition Editor will work alongside the current Editor for a short spell before a handover in June 2022.
