University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is a newly formed organisation following a merger between Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WSHFT) and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust (BSUH) on 1 April 2021. WSHFT and BSUH have been working in partnership with a shared leadership team for four years leading up to the recent merger. Our vision (Excellent care, every time - "Where better never stops") is at the heart of all that that we do - we pride ourselves in putting the compassionate care of patients first and foremost. WSHFT became the first non-specialist acute hospital trust to be awarded Outstanding in all of the CQC’s key inspection areas, and BSUH became the fastest improving acute hospital trust in England and was rated Good overall and Outstanding for caring by the CQC. Moving forward together, the ambition is to continue improving and providing excellent care, every time, for patients.

The merger was a technical but important process for both WSHFT and BSUH, which will ensure that the right leadership, structures, and governance are in place. Our journey has started but we have much still to learn as we work towards full merger, enabled by our Patient First ethos which shapes our values and gives structure to our improvement and performance management. Our shared sense of purpose, commitment to investing in and developing our workforce, and focus on continuous improvement in the pursuit of excellent care, every time, for our patients underpins all that we do. The largest part of this journey is investing in staff and creating a vibrant and supportive organisation where successful careers flourish.

We are seeking two substantive complex spinal surgeons (orthopaedic or neurosurgery) as replacement posts. The role is to provide elective and emergency spinal surgery to the southeast region and participate in the provision of a dedicated complex spinal surgery on call rota in a major trauma centre.

We are looking for an individual who is an outstanding clinician and leader. There are many opportunities provided by working in an acute teaching hospital with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, teaching, and research.

You will be working within a team of consultant spinal consultants providing a regional spinal service, supporting the Major Trauma Centre. This post is for spinal surgery only, although currently four of these consultants also contribute to the cranial neurosurgery service.

The service is supported by two spinal practitioners, separate elective and emergency theatres, an O arm, and regular access to intraoperative neurophysiology when needed. We have close working relationships with the MSK services with triage of patients and weekly multidisciplinary meetings.

Please refer to the person specification in the job description with regards to CCT requirements.

In addition to supplying us with your referee details for the last 3 years, please also provide us with the contact details of your Responsible Officer for Appraisal and Revalidation.

In the interest of equal opportunities, we want to make sure that information about candidates is provided in the same format, so all applicants should fill in the standard application form on the NHS Jobs website and attach their CV.  Please be aware that candidates will be informed by email of the outcome of their application.
