About Herefordshire GP Pool

Are you a GP looking for more flexible working options within the NHS? Then come and join us in Herefordshire’s Flexible GP Pool!

Our aim is to create a pool of well trained and supported GPs, offering those who want to work flexibly a way to be part of a stable Herefordshire workforce and supporting our Primary Care Networks to increase General Practice capacity.

Herefordshire GP Pool offers GPs a wide range of salaried or locum, flexible or fixed term sessions, in and out of hours, within the NHS.

All patient records are accessed via the EMIS clinical platform, including (uniquely in the UK) in the Out of Hours environment. This enables an holistic and joined up approach to patient care and enables home working for those who do not wish to relocate.

We offer weekly training and education sessions as well as a wide range of CPD opportunities to fit your aspirations and ambitions.

Our pay scales and benefits package reflect your experience level and include an NHS pension.

What to know more? Take a look at our video in which Taurus Healthcare’s Medical Director talks to Dr Frankie Howells about the Flexible GP Pool.

About Herefordshire

Herefordshire is a very rural, beautiful green county with a population of around 200,000 people. There are 19 GP practices, all of whom own and run the GP Federation alongside Tenbury Wells Surgery, who joined us in 2021. The county has five Primary Care Networks – two in the city centre and three covering the market towns and rural areas.

Ninety-five per cent of the land in the county is classified as ‘rural’ with over half of the population living in rural areas. About one quarter of the population is over 65 (compared to about 18% nationally).

In terms of healthcare, Herefordshire has one mental health and learning disabilities provider, one acute hospital and community services provider, one countywide GP federation (Taurus Healthcare), one local authority and clinical commissioning group and strong community engagement. We are committed to working together to improve health and wellbeing for Herefordshire people and to provide more joined up care, closer to home.

The Coronavirus pandemic caused many people to reflect and re-evaluate what is important to them. Factors such as time with family and friends, green spaces and clean air are amongst the top of the list. In Herefordshire, you can find plenty of space and unspoilt country to explore, a vibrant cathedral city and bustling market towns and an active arts and cultural scene.

Please do come and join us in our beautiful county!

Interested, but not ready to relocate? We have opportunities for remotely based GPs too! Please send us your CV or get in touch to find out more.

About Taurus Healthcare / Herefordshire General Practice

Taurus Healthcare was established in 2012 by all of Herefordshire’s GP Practices and continues to be owned and run by them. Collectively, our aim is threefold:

  • To support local practices, eg by helping them with recruitment, managing staff and management support.
  • To provide clinical services, eg when surgeries are closed or when it makes sense to deliver a single service across the county. Working towards 24/7 patient access to General Practice.
  • To represent the views of General Practice at local health and care meetings so that care is shaped around the needs of our local populations. This is done primarily through our innovative GP Leadership Group.

We are passionate about providing the right care, at the right time, in the right place for Herefordshire residents and making ‘every contact count’.
