This is an established 10 PA post for the Gloucestershire Laboratories based at Cheltenham General Hospital. The contract will be held by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Subspecialisation has been introduced amongst the medical staff within the department. This post will contribute to at least two from gastrointestinal, urology, gynaecological, breast and gynaecological cytopathology.

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The appointees will be managerially responsible to the Clinical Head of Department of the Gloucestershire Histopathology Department and through that person to the Specialty Director, the Director of Service, the Medical Director and the Trust Board. The current acting Head of Department for Histopathology is Dr Patricia Vergani, with subspeciality leadership provided as per the consultant list below. The Specialty Director is Dr Philippa Moore, and Divisional Chief of Service is Dr Kate Hellier. The management arrangements are consistent with the principles as stated in the Strategic Review of Pathology Services, particularly paragraphs 4.22-4.26 and meet current UKAS standards.

Job description

The appointee will be responsible of cut up, reporting and support Consultant colleagues with MDT attendance. We routinely work with expert practitioners in dissection dealing with small and large specimens and we are planning to change our diagnostic workflow using digital pathology for primary diagnosis. Development of appropriate sub-speciality interests will be encouraged and supported, particularly for those with an interest in urology, gastrointestinal, gynaecological pathology, breast and non-gynaecological cytopathology. The department has a strong record in gastrointestinal pathology teaching, hosting the Gloucestershire Gastro-intestinal Pathology Conference and we are a Cancer Centre from the County and neighbouring Trusts for these specialties.

As an employee of the Trust the appointee will work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts patients.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

  • To be on the GMC register with current licence to practice
  • To conform to all revalidation requirements : applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to UK CCT
  • To participate in the provision of a first class cellular pathology service.
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policies.
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts service plans.
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Diagnostic and Support Services Division or the Trust.

Qualifications
Essential

 

  • Full registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
  • On Specialist Register for Pathology via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification Higher degree
  • Essential clinical experience: Proven clinical skills in cellular pathology

  • Willing and able to work with colleagues in management and other specialities to ensure the delivery of a high quality, safe and reliable service Familiar with clinical governance A willingness to accept responsibility Awareness of current relevant developments within the NHS
  • Desirable audit and evidence-based practice: Training in evidence-based practice
