The Department is made up of a team of 15 consultants, 4 of whom are Gynae-oncologists, 3 covering purely Obstetrics and the remaining 8 covering both obstetrics and gynaecology with a variety of special interests. These include ambulatory gynaecology both therapeutic and diagnostic, benign laparoscopic surgery, endometriosis surgery, urogynaecology and fertility services. There is also a full range of Obstetric service including diabetic clinic, endocrine clinic, mental health clinic, Rainbow clinic, preterm birth clinic as well as a midwife led mode of birth clinic.

The consultants work across two sites (Preston and Chorley) depending on their job plan. Out-patient services are provided at Chorley and out-patient/in-patients at Preston. There are midwifery led birth units on both sites and a 12 bedded obstetric unit in Preston. There is a thriving home birth service and the Maternity Unit Network awarded the maternity service with Beacon status as a result of the successful midwifery led services.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for outstanding candidates who will complement and enhance our services. The post holder will contribute to emergency obstetrics and gynaecology on call cover (currently on a 1:12 rota) and will run a high risk antenatal clinic along with a general gynaecology clinic.

Job description

This post is 10 PAs as set out in the Job plan below (subject to discussion). This is an example only and exact distribution of PA will depend on the successful applicants skills and interests.

All consultants are expected to work productively for 42 weeks a year and will be required to undertake annual appraisal, revalidation and job planning within their allocated contractual SPA time (1.5 SPA per week). Any SPA activity over 1.5 will be in line with the trust SPA tariff and will be reviewed as part of the annual job planning process

Person Specification

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Must be entered on the Specialist Register (or entry within 6 months)
  • Experience of working in NHS
  • ASTM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice or equivalent
  • Additional ATSM in special interest


  • Higher degree - eg MD
  • Teaching Qualification eg PGCert
  • Teaching Experience
  • Attendance at MOET or PROMPT course

Experience & Skills

  • Full range of Obstetric Skills
  • Gynaecological skills in outpatient and inpatient setting.
  • Gynaecological surgery including surgical management of ectopic pregnancy

  • Evidence of commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/service development
