Here at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, we are excited to invite applications for a full-time Consultant, specialising in Medical Retina, to join our Ophthalmology department.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a vibrant consultant team that has recently expanded with the successful recruitment of 5 new high-calibre colleagues over the last 2 years. There are currently 12 consultants, 3 associate specialists, and 7 specialty registrars within the department.

The Department of Ophthalmology is based at Musgrove Park Hospital and provides a comprehensive ophthalmology service to the population of North, West and South Somerset, numbering approximately 544,000.

The population has been increasing due to developments in the area in the last 10 years. Outpatient clinics, and all surgery, are undertaken at Musgrove Park Hospital. Peripheral clinics are held at Bridgwater, Minehead, Chard, and Burnham on Sea Community Hospitals.

You will be joining an NHS Trust that is one of only 12 Global Digital Exemplars in the country - that is also implementing the Medisight EPR - and has recently received a ‘Good’ rating from the CQC.

You will help provide and develop the macular service with the existing consultant colleague. A general ophthalmology commitment is also anticipated and previous experience of one year in an appropriate fellowship training position is expected. You will be encouraged to take a full part in postgraduate education, and to help to develop innovative ways of delivering healthcare.

You will have completed CCT or equivalent (CESR) and must be on the Specialist Register.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is the first NHS Trust on the English mainland to provide community, mental health and acute hospital services. We work with health and social care partners in Somerset to ensure that we deliver outstanding services that meet the needs of our population.

Our trust was formed on 1 April 2020 when Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust merged.

Taunton is a beautiful area of the South West, located between areas of outstanding natural beauty. Somerset offers you the opportunity to live near or visit some of the UK’s most desirable locations; from beautiful local beaches; to the vibrant cosmopolitan centres of Bristol, Bath and Exeter, all within easy reach.

The County town of Taunton boasts a wide range of local amenities including; an extensive range of shopping, a wide range of local restaurants, sporting and recreational facilities.

There is an outstanding range and quality of education available both primary and secondary level and state and private provision.  Cost of housing is relatively low for the south west and  crime rates are very low – all of which contributes to excellent standards of living for families and the opportunity for great work life balance.

Taunton also provides access to the M5 motorway and a mainline intercity rail link. Travel connections are convenient with the main line station offering trains to London Paddington in less than 2 hours.
