CARE OF THE ELDERLY & STROKE MEDICINE

From November 2021 for up to 12 months

We are looking for a middle grade doctor (ST3 and above) to work within the Medical Division at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital in the Care of the Elderly and Stroke Departments.

Main duties of the job

This post offers excellent experience within an enthusiastic department working in different aspects of Geriatric and Stroke medicine including the Frailty Assessment Service, Geriatric Medicine wards, Orthogeriatrics, Hyperacute Stroke Unit & Stroke Rehabilitation.

This post would be ideal for post MRCP doctors who are confident working at middle grade level and are looking to expand their knowledge and experience in Care of the Elderly and Stroke Medicine, with opportunities for involvement in management & leadership, education & teaching, quality improvement & clinical audit. This broad range of experiences would be invaluable when applying for any future higher training.

The Trust received approval to become a Foundation Trust in July 2004 to provide acute hospital services for the whole of Gloucestershire. The Trust has an income plan for 2017/18 of circa £500 million. The Trust was rated as Good with an Outstanding Critical Care Service in 2018 by the Care Quality Commission. Gloucestershire Royal Hospital 580 plus 48 day beds (628)Cheltenham General Hospital 378 plus 33 day beds (411)

Job description

The successful applicant will be based on one of our COTE or Stroke wards (we usually rotate the Registrars within the department every 4 months). They will be expected to support the Consultant ward rounds, attend the daily board rounds and provide middle grade level medical support and patient review on the wards. The candidate would also be expected to lead their own ward rounds independently, or with assistance from a junior member of the team.

While working with the Stroke team, the successful candidate will gain broad experience in all aspects of Stroke medicine from the assessment of the acutely unwell stroke patient at the front door to MDT decision making in rehabilitating patients.

We expect the post holder to participate in ward based teaching with junior and MDT staff and actively encourage their engagement with e-portfolio and training opportunities.

Attendance at departmental specialty out-patient clinics would be expected. The post holder would also be part of the e-referral rota, seeing referrals from other medical and surgical specialties to give specialty COTE advice (with Consultant support and supervision where necessary).

This post would include participation in the medical registrar on-call rota, managing the unselected acute medical take.

EDUCATION

There is an active Post Graduate Medical Centre at both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital with medical libraries on both sites. The COTE department runs a weekly dedicated teaching program (currently virtually) that members of the department are invited to attend. In the Medical Directorate each week there is a Grand Round.

SALARY

Will be determined based on the level of experience of the successful candidate, years of service and participation in and frequency of the on-call rota.

This appointment is for 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm with on-call supplement.

Basic pay for ST3 level Dr would be MS03-08 £50,017 £56,077 per annum .

LEAVE

Study and Annual Leave will be in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff. At least six weeks notice must be given for all annual and study leave requests, in order that arrangements may be made for internal cover. Post-holders are required to collaborate with colleagues regarding arrangements for annual/study leave.

Essential

  • Out of hours experience relevant to the job.

  • Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job.

Desirable

  • Current ALS certification of equivalent

Qualifications & Eligibility
Essential

  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Completion of F1/F2 years.
  • At least 24 months experience as medical SHO in appropriate acute medical specialties
  • Full MRCP (UK)
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Evidence of achievement of appropriate competencies in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice including: o) good clinical care o) maintaining good medical practice o) good relationships and communication with patients o) good working relationships with colleagues o) good teaching and training o) professional behaviour and probity o) delivery of good acute clinical care

Desirable

  • Intercalated BSc or equivalent
  • Higher degrees including MSc or PhD
  • Previous experience of working in Care of the Elderly or Stroke Medicine
