Consultant in General Anaesthesia (Special Interest in Gynaecological/Colorectal Oncology Surgery and HiPEC))

Applications are invited for the consultant post in the department of Anaesthetics. This is a full time post created as a result of retirement. The post is a General Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Trauma Anaesthesia. Special interests in most major sub interests of anaesthesia can usually be accommodated.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of acute clinical services through the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (1,000 beds) and Cromer and District Hospital, including more specialist services such as oncology and radiotherapy, neonatology, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, rheumatology, paediatric medicine and surgery.

Our staff of over 7,000 treat more than one million patients; people from Norfolk, neighbouring counties and further afield. Our patients are referred to us by around 100 local GP practices but also from other acute hospitals and primary care trusts around the country.

As a university teaching hospital we have developed our research and development strategy in partnership with the University of East Anglia.

We also work closely with our partners on the Norwich Research Park and Norwich Radiology Academy to take forward our ambitious targets for research and development.

NNUH provides surgical services for a population of approximately 1 million, serving patients from the James Paget Hospital (Great Yarmouth), and Queen Elizabeth Hospital (King's Lynn) as well as those living in its own catchment area.

The anaesthetic department is one of the busiest in the country providing support for approximately 30000 surgical procedures per annum. It has recently been awarded the prestigious Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA). The department supports 24 theatres (17 inpatient and 7 Day Surgery), 2 obstetric theatres, eye theatres and remote anaesthesia in various other locations around the Trust.

NNUH is currently the busiest Trauma Unit in the East of England Trauma Network and plans to develop as a second Major Trauma Centre have recently been agreed. All major trauma is currently managed within the trust with the exception of head-injuries requiring neurosurgical intervention or invasive monitoring, complex hepatobiliary injuries requiring surgical intervention and some cardiac/ cardiothoracic injuries and we currently receive secondary transfers for complex ortho-trauma and reconstructive plastic surgery. There is a dedicated trauma theatre which delivers a consultant led service 7 days a week and the appointee would form part of the trauma on call rota as well as providing daytime service sessions.
