CITY HOSPITAL, BIRMINGHAM & SANDWELL HOSPITAL WEST BROMWICH

CONSULTANT PHYSICIANS x 2 RESPIRATORY AND GENERAL MEDICINE

Applications are invited for the posts of Consultant Physicians in Respiratory and General Medicine. One post is a replacement post, and the other is a new post to expand integrated care and general respiratory services.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants would be joining the ten Chest Physicians working at two acute sites City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell Hospital in West Bromwich.

The Respiratory Unit within the Trust has a designated respiratory hub located on the City site, two sophisticated Pulmonary Function Laboratories that are managed from the City site, and well equipped Endoscopy Suites. EBUS and medical thoracoscopy are carried out, and there is an established pleural and home NIV service.

About us

Our hospital is an integrated care organisation and involved in the Royal College of Physicians Future Hospital Project. There are supporting junior medical staff, specialist nurses for inpatient respiratory care, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, and TB, and a dedicated respiratory general manager.

Job description

Job responsibilities The post is likely to include cross site working. There would be opportunities to develop and expand specialty interests. All interests could be considered, including COPD, cough, breathlessness, non-invasive ventilation, bronchiectasis, acute portal respiratory work and integrated care. One of the posts would have an integrated care focus following a successful funding application with the CCG to deliver expanded respiratory integrated care work. If the applicant requests, there may the opportunity to work sessions on the Acute medical unit and drive the interface between respiratory medicine and AMU.

The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands. The Trust is home to a number of University departments that are involved in active research. The applicant will be expected to be involved in education and supervision of medical students and junior doctors.

We serve an ethnically diverse population, with a wide range of respiratory disease and deliver a comprehensive service that allows for subspecalisation in many aspects of respiratory medicine. There are strong links with community respiratory services, and these are planned to develop further.

On 14th July 2014 the Trust received the go ahead to build the 670 bed Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMH) and secured funding of £360m to do so. The building work commenced in 2016 with conclusion expected in 2022. The new state of the art acute hospital in Grove Lane, Smethwick will bring together all acute services onto one site promoting better patient safety and patient experience.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register for Respiratory and General Internal Medicine or be within 6 months of gaining their CCT at the time of interview. A broad experience of respiratory disease and general internal medicine is required. The successful appointee will also be expected to participate in the on-call rota for un-selected acute medical admissions. If the appointee prefers there may be opportunities to work additionally in acute medicine.
