This 10 PA Locum Consultant Psychiatrist post is based within the East London Forensic Service.

The successful candidate will work in the Learning Disability Service at the John Howard Centre.  The core part of the role is on Clerkenwell Ward, a low secure ward. Care may also need to be provided for a very small number of patients on Moorgate Ward, a medium secure ward.

The successful candidate will act as the Responsible Clinician for not more than 17 in-patients.  The core part of the job is to provide clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team on Clerkenwell Ward, which is a 15 bedded low-secure ward, although bed occupancy is often significantly less than 100%.  The post-holder would also provide care to a maximum of two patients on Moorgate Ward, which is currently configured for for patients with very complex needs and which has dedicated nursing and MDT resource.

Clerkenwell Ward provides care to men with acute mental health needs, significant comorbidity and those who are in a more rehabilitation phase of their treatment pathway.  All have a learning disability.  There are typically fewer than four new admissions a year.

Patients on Moorgate Ward have a learning disability and typically present with challenging behaviour in the context of complex psychopathology.  They commonly have a long length of stay. Admissions are uncommon and typically occur less than once a year.

The role also involves seeing referrals for admission to learning disability secure services, along with two consultant colleagues.  In total, approximately two or three referrals are received by the learning disability secure services for admission a month.

Both Clerkenwell and Moorgate Wards are fully staffed with multi-disciplinary teams including a full time middle-grade doctor on Clerkenwell Ward and a part time middle grade doctor on Moorgate Ward, and a Modern Matron, Clinical Nurse Manager, nursing team, a Psychologist, OT, Speech and Language Therapist and Social Worker on both wards. There is also dedicated administrative support.  Specialist education resource is available, as are Arts Therapies.

The post is available for six months.
