Consultant Immunologist and Allergist
Applications are invited for a Consultant Immunologist and Allergist to join our dedicated, enthusiastic, and ambitious team committed to delivering high quality clinical and laboratory services both locally and regionally.
UHL consists of 3 teaching hospitals and is one on the largest hospital trusts in England. Our hospitals include a regional congenital cardiac centre, a nationally renowned respiratory centre, and one of the 5 ECMO centres in the UK. Our catchment area includes Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, as well as northern Northamptonshire, accounting for over a million people with significant rural and ethnically diverse populations. The area is a vibrant and welcoming place to live and work, from a modern city to ‘picture postcard’ villages.
The Clinical Immunology and Allergy department in Leicester provides a specialist Immunology laboratory, adult and paediatric immunodeficiency services, and delivers adult allergy services in conjunction with the Adult Allergy department. The service is accredited to IQAS standards and is currently undergoing QPIDS accreditation (virtual assessment completed, awaiting site visit and final documentation). The Department is a member of the regional Trent Immunology and Allergy Consortium (TRIAC) network, which aims to ensure provision of high quality Clinical Immunology and Allergy services across the broader region.
The clinical team consists of 3 medical Consultant Immunologists (including this post), a Paediatrician with an interest in immunology, 2 Specialist Registrars, 4 Specialist Immunology and Allergy Nurses, a Band 3 HCA, and a Specialist Dietician. We work collaboratively with 2 Consultant Allergists from the Adult Allergy department. We are supported by 3 medical secretaries (2.0 WTE) and a dedicated clinic co-ordinator.
The Immunology laboratory is fully accredited by UKAS and is co-located with clinical offices within a fully integrated Department on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site, with a planned move to new purpose-built premises on this site in the next 2 years as part of the UHL ‘building better hospitals’ reconfiguration programme. The laboratory offers a comprehensive range of immunology assays both locally and regionally for immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, allergy, and haematological malignancies.
You are expected to participate in day-to-day functions of the adult immunology and allergy service and immunology laboratory, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical audit, research, and development. You will also be required to undertake management duties and work within a multidisciplinary team.
The appointment is whole time. Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists, and full GMC registration with a license to practice, and inclusion on the Specialist Register (or equivalent) is a requirement.
As this post is regulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999, The Criminal Justice Courts Act 2000 and/or the Care Standards Act 2000, an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Scheme check will be requested by the Trust in the event of a successful application.
