Musculoskeletal and Specialist Surgery Clinical Management Group 

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at University Hospitals of Leicester with a special interested in Lower Limb Arthroplasty, predominantly Knee soft tissue. This post will also include participation in the trauma service. 

Leicester has a high reputation for the provision of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. You will become a member of a large and highly rated musculoskeletal unit which currently has 41 Consultants covering the whole range of subspecialty interests. We also have an extended multi-disciplinary team of extended scope physiotherapists and advanced nurse practitioners. 

This post will help shape and provide the Knee soft tissue service for Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland. We are currently developing links with colleagues in East Midlands South for the provision of specialist knee revision surgery. You will join the existing knee/hip team in providing knee/hip arthroplasty surgery and develop specialty interest as per the service needs.

Leicester has one of the busiest Emergency departments in the country, seeing over 150 000 new patients per year. It is also one of the largest arthroplasty centres, performing around 2000 lower limb arthroplasties per year. Increasing complex and revision work is being referred to Leicester for specialist management. You will be a member of the general on-call rota (1 in 16) providing trauma care and contributing to the lower limb services respectively. Emergency work is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Elective work will be undertaken at the Leicester General Hospital. 

There are great opportunities for research and teaching. The University Hospitals of Leicester is a major acute teaching hospital trust. Close links exist with local Universities and NHS Trusts. Leicester is an active partner in the local regional academic and clinical networks. You will be expected to help supervise and support Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery Specialty Registrars based in Leicester. 

Background: This post is permanent, and applicants should be on the GMC specialist register or, within 3 months of the interview date, have a certificate of completion of specialist training. Applicants must have FRCS (Tr&Orth) or equivalent, and would ideally have appropriate subspecialty fellowship training. 

You will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit. The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust consists of three acute teaching hospitals serving the whole population of Leicestershire. It is fully committed to Continuing Medical Education for consultants.
