Specialty Doctor in Medical Microbiology and Virology
Applications are invited for a Fixed Term Specialty Doctor post in Medical Microbiology and Virology. The post is available for one year in the first instance with the potential for further extension or becoming substantive by mutual agreement. The post provide an opportunity for candidates who wish to work on a full or part time basis and will be primarily based at Aberdeen Royal infirmary.
This department is fully compliant with the standards contained in ISO 15189 as accredited by UKAS and provides a comprehensive Diagnostic service to NHS Grampian (population. approx. 500,000), some referral work from NHS Orkney and NHS Shetland and a nationally funded Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing Service for Cystic Fibrosis Non-fermenters. Clinical duties will consist of clinical and diagnostic work of the Molecular Diagnostic and Immunoassay Laboratory as well as in Clinical Liaison and Antibiotic Stewardship. The post holder will contribute to medical diagnostic duties of the COVID Regional North Hub which provides Regional COVID Diagnostic Service to the North of Scotland.
Located in the North East of Scotland, Aberdeen is an affluent, friendly and vibrant city, combining all the amenities of a large city with quick, easy access to its beautiful surrounding countryside and coastline. The successful candidate will be joining a large Medical Microbiology department which covers a comprehensive range of clinical services, and, as a teaching hospital department there is strong involvement in a wide range of educational activities. There are also many opportunities to develop research interests in collaboration with the local universities. The successful candidate will have 4 hours per week for Supporting Professional Activities including professional development, teaching and training, and quality improvement.
It is essential that candidates have a minimum of 4 years’ postgraduate training (full time or equivalent), at least 2 of which should be in Medical Microbiology, and full GMC registration with a license to practise for the duration of the appointment. Possession of the FRCPath is desirable.
