Job overview

We are seeking to recruit a full time Specialty Doctor in Breast Surgery at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust for a period of 12 months. This is a full time appointment, and you will be based at The Princess Royal Hospital but will be expected to travel to The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for clinics. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Breast team which has 2 General Breast Surgeons, 2 Oncoplastic Surgeons, 5 Specialty Doctors (including this post), 2 Associate Specialists, 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner and 5 Clinical Nurse Specialists. Candidates for this role must have GMC registration and recent experience within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The Department of Breast Surgery provides an integrated service to Shropshire and North Powys with in-patient and day-case facilities at The Princess Royal Hospital. Outpatient clinics are based at The Princess Royal Hospital and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Nearly 6000 new patients were seen in the ‘one-stop’ breast clinics in the last 12 months and at least 550 breast cancers were diagnosed. The successful candidate will be expected to assess new referrals independently after a period of structured supervision in addition to managing patients in the follow up clinics.

The post attracts 10 Programmed Activities, plus 2 PA’s for on call and 4% On Call Supplement. The successful candidate will take part in a 1:6 non-resident General Surgery on-call rota based at The Princess Royal Hospital. If suitable applicants were interested this post could be filled on the basis of part-time, flexible working or job -share appointments.

Please see person specification for job requirements.

Working for our organisation

Our Hospitals are located in Shrewsbury and Telford and are brimming with exemplary teams of hardworking individuals.

Shropshire is a beautiful county.  The central location makes travelling around the UK extremely easy. As well as being only a short distance from major cities and busy transport links including Birmingham airport, our county also borders with beautiful north Wales which is abundant in outdoor activities, brilliant beaches, and thrilling scenery.

Both hospitals are based in Shropshire, a short 20 minutes’ drive apart. Shrewsbury has recently been named in the ‘Sunday Times Best Places to Live Guide’ as one of the top places to live in the country. It is a wonderful bustling place, with affordable housing, fantastic schools and great out-of-work activities for everyone.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a full time appointment to The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust to work in the Department of Breast and General Surgery based at The Princess Royal Hospital although you will be required to do work at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.  This is subject to satisfactory assessment after 6 months.

The Post

The supervision of the Speciality Doctor is shared between the Consultants on the firm.  The work is similar to Specialist Registrars acting as an intermediary between the Consultant and the House staff.  You will work mainly for one Consultant, helping in the management of in-patient and outpatient care but this may change depending on the operational needs of the service. You will be expected to cross-cover your colleagues as per operational needs of the service.  It is a requirement of employment to be prepared to work at any additional or different locations owned or served by the Trust, either on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.

Attendance on ward rounds, operating sessions and outpatient clinics are essential parts of the post. The amount and type of operating will depend on the skills you have already acquired and will be decided by the Consultant.  Communication with General Practitioners is an essential part of the work. This will include prompt preparation of discharge summaries, letters and correspondence and should be in line with the Breast Department and Surgical Centre standards.

You are expected to provide cover at the Princess Royal Hospital site which is the non-acute site for General Surgery. This involves covering general Surgical emergencies that may arise on a Medical, General Paediatric, Gynaecology or Orthopaedic ward. You will also be responsible for covering any Breast inpatients. There is 1:6 non-resident on call rota for General Surgery at PRH. There is a separate Consultant General Surgeon on-call for each site.

Please read the full job description and person specification before applying for the post.

Company

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales. Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury which are located 20 minutes’ drive apart covering a range of specialties and providing care to the local population. Almost a quarter of the county is designated as the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and we have three national nature reserves. We also have internationally important wetland sites, special areas of conservation (of European significance) and many sites of special scientific interest.

We are entering an exciting phase of change at SaTH with the transformation of the Princess Royal Hospital into a specialised site for planned care, and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site a specialised site for emergency care through our Hospital Transformation Programme.
