Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist

An opportunity has arisen for a substantive full time Consultant Neurophysiologist to join the Neurophysiology Department based at Northampton General Hospital. We are looking for a Consultant to lead the clinical team and provide an excellent comprehensive regional neurophysiology service. You will need to have good leadership and communication skills and a desire to develop the service.

Part time applications will be considered.

Applicants must have CCT in Clinical Neurophysiology, or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT. Full registration with the GMC on the Specialist Register is required.

There are close academic links with the Neuroscience Department at the JRH Oxford.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate is expected to be the clinical lead for Neurophysiology and complement the Neurological service of the Medicine Directorate which include:


  • 1 full time Neurophysiologist post advertised
  • 2 Consultant Neurologists 1 dual accredited, providing neurophysiology support
  • SPR in Neurology on rotation from Oxford
  • 1 Neuro-rehabilitation Consultant

About us

Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust is a teaching hospital in partnership with Leicester University. We are a large district hospital (765 inpatient beds) providing a full range of acute services from a site located close to the centre of the town. The local population served is approximately 380,000. Neurophysiological services are also provided to 3 neighbouring District General Hospitals.

This is a well established and respected Neurophysiology service originating in 1955 as an EEG department and has expanded over the years to provide a wide range of neurophysiological tests for adults and children. Currently the service offers routine and sleep EEGs, sedation and Melatonin induced sleep EEGs, portable EEGs, Ambulatory EEG with video, VEP and SEP, NCS and EMG, CP led CTS & UNE clinics. The post holder will deliver all aspects of neurophysiological investigations and encouraged to lead the development of the department.

Job Purpose

To provide a Clinical Neurophysiology Service.

Duties & Responsibilities

The number of sessions to be devoted to the following activities will be dependent upon the departments need.

Peripheral nerve conduction and EMG out-patient clinics

Supervision of clinical physiology led NCS clinics

Inpatient / bedside NCS and EMG

EEG reporting

EP reporting

Ambulatory EEG reporting

Training junior staff

Be prepared to participate in management duties within the department and the Trust

The successful candidate will agree a job plan with the clinical director prior to commencement of duties.

This will consist of: 4 PAs peripheral NCS / EMG, 4 PAs EEG reporting, 2 SPAs
