Applications are invited for a whole-time Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) consists of three acute teaching hospitals serving the population of Leicestershire and the wider region. It is fully committed to Continuing Medical Education for Consultants.

This is a new post in the Clinical Management Group of Intensive Care, Theatres, Anaesthesia, Pain Management, and Sleep (ITAPS) at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site, with a view to the development of the Paediatric Anaesthetic Service.

UHL is currently undergoing a process of reconfiguration with associated site-investment, the Government has recently announced that Leicester’s Hospitals will be getting £450m of capital investment over the next 5 years to complete our investment and reconfiguration plans. The £450m programme includes two ‘super’ intensive care units, part of which involves consolidating all paediatric services into a dedicated Children's Hospital at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The Paediatric Anaesthetic group is currently made up of 10 consultants. We are developing the service to provide extra paediatric emergency sessions as well as to provide prospective consultant paediatric anaesthetic cover to specialist lists, pre-operative assessment, and acute pain. All the consultants within the group have a flexible component to their job plans to facilitate this.

The Anaesthetic department provides paediatric anaesthetic cover for the following specialties: Paediatric General Surgery, Urology, Thoracic surgery, Orthopaedics & Trauma, ENT, Maxillofacial & Dental, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Oncology, diagnostic and interventional Radiology & Endoscopy, Pre-assessment, and Pain. Anaesthesia for neonatal surgery is undertaken on a regular basis.

It is expected that you will have received training and experience in all areas of paediatric anaesthesia and neonatal surgery and will take part in the paediatric anaesthetic on call rota.

The scope of surgical practice at the hospitals offers exciting and varied clinical opportunities for consultant anaesthetists, and there is continued support for non-clinical professional activities both inside and outside the trust.

Every day at University Hospitals of Leicester we save lives, improve lives and usher in new life. Our Trust Values determine our behaviour and our culture. We are a passionate and creative team and at our best when we work together.

We want to continue to improve everything that we do, so that we can achieve our Vision: Caring at its best for every patient, every time. Our Quality Strategy, “Becoming the Best”, describes how we are doing that in a determined, targeted, and systematic way, with our staff the champions of change and our patients not just beneficiaries but partners.

This is particularly exciting time for Leicester’s Hospitals. We have been given £450m by the Government to provide a host of new facilities and reconfigure services between our three main sites. Flagship projects include a new Children’s Hospital, a new Maternity Hospital, a new Treatment Centre, and two new Intensive Care Units. Equally importantly, we are going “paperless”, with a £12m investment in our NerveCentre computer system to help our team deliver world class care.

If you are ambitious about what you do and strive to improve patient experience, bring your dedication and determination here and you will benefit from the support of an experienced and enthusiastic multi-professional team committed to the delivery of brilliant patient care.

As this post is regulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999, The Criminal Justice Courts Act 2000 and/or the Care Standards Act 2000 an enhanced police criminal records disclosure will be requested by the Trust in the event of a successful application.
