About Southern District Health Board

Welcome to Southern DHB! Our DHB covers the largest geographical catchment amongst all the DHB's in New Zealand. We proudly strive to provide top quality healthcare to our diverse patient population. Our recently refurbished general Intensive Care Unit is linked with our surgical HDU and we work closely with colleagues in our coronary care/medical high dependency unit too. Our workload includes adult cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery and trauma as well as a broad spectrum of medical and surgical ICU. In addition we provide paediatric and burns critical care for up to 72 hours pending expatriation to national service centres. We don't mind saying that we love it, have a virtual look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veRi5Dd0mKw

We are now looking to complete our team with three dual trained intensivists in medical specialities of anaestheisa, respiratory medicine, cardiology or renal medicine to come and join us. Applications for one-year, fixed-term appointments for single (or dual) speciality intensivists wishing a sabbatical will also be considered.

About the role

Dunedin Hospital has almost 400 beds and provides care for a population of approximately 350,000 spread over the lower South Island of New Zealand (our catchment area is approximately equal to the size of Belgium). Being a Tertiary Hospital for our district, our staff enjoy close relationships with the University of Otago, School of Medicine and Otago Polytechnic School of Nursing. We benefit from continuous professional development, involvement with medical and nursing student training, in-situ and remote stimulation training, participation in research and many more opportunities arising from working in a combined clinical-academic environment.

As a part of our ICU team, you would have demonstrated a strong desire to maintain high standards of practice and an unequivocal dedication to provide clinical leadership and consistent, high-quality medical input to the inter-disciplinary team. This role will involve a mixture of cover for ICU, aeromedical retrieval, HDU and outreach services and your primary speciality. Your ICU duties will include a mix of first and second on-calls shared with fourteen other colleagues in ICM. Part-time working with a full contribution to the on-call roster is possible.

Our tight knit team values the importance of creating a work environment that is welcoming, safe, equitable and inclusive; therefore, it is key for you to have a sound understanding of and commitment to multi-cultural living and family / whanau principles. These core values align with our work and life practices and team well-being. Duties include: patient management, leading ward rounds, undertaking clinical procedures, quality and safety work, teaching, audit, participation in research and attendance at clinical review meetings amongst others. However, life is for living and Otago is an amazing place to live; we also work closely with our team to ensure achievement of good work/life balance.

About you

You will need to have, or be eligible to be awarded, vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council in intensive care medicine and/or your other speciality. To be considered for these roles, it is essential that you hold a post-graduate training and qualification in adult Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM or equivalent) as well as in your other specialist field.
