Applications are invited for Trust Doctor within Paediatric Surgery - Registrar Doctor ST3-7 level.

This post is suitable for surgeons who have completed their Core Surgical Training and are looking for experience in Paediatric Surgery.

Applicants must be fully registered practitioners who have completed basic surgical training.

Possession of Higher Qualifications (preferably MRCS or equivalent) is essential.

The post will enable the service to maintain an adequate level of Paediatric Surgery activity and on-call cover and will be an excellent opportunity for candidates looking gain further experience in the speciality.

This post is a service post and will not be recognised for training. The successful post holder must have full registration with the General Medical Council.

This is based at HRI and W&CH hospitals with the responsibility for the care of inpatients, outpatients and emergency admitted during the daytime and when on call. The appointee will    work at the Specialist Registrar level ST3. Out of hours, the appointee will work on the Registrar rota (1:5), including prospective cover.

Study leave funding is unlikely to be granted due to the short duration of the post. If the post is extended this can be considered.

Standard contracted hours 48 per week plus on call for Registrar rota including prospective cover

In accordance with the Terms and Conditions of service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) the Registrar will:

  1. Be expected in the normal run of his/her duty with his/her contract and job description to cover for the occasional brief absence as far as is practical
  2. Where contracts include prospective cover he/she will be expected to provide cover to the annual and study leave of colleagues providing always that the resulting increase in duties is reasonable in the circumstances and
  3. Be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances without additional remuneration.

The trainee accepts that he/she will perform duties under these provisions, at the request of the appropriate Consultants, in consultation, where practicable, with his/her colleagues, both senior and junior. Although it has been agreed between professional and the Department that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State does stress that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and, in particular, that junior should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods on a regular basis.

During short-term the Trust may attempt to appoint locum staff when it considers appropriate.

Where it is not appropriate to obtain an external locum, any doctor may be requested to undertake some out-of-hours duties, for which extra standard rate payments will be made.

The Specialty Registrar/ Trust Doctor salary will be in accordance with the current nationally agreed salary scale.
