Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Paediatrician which has arisen to help support an increase in demand within the service and to support with the RSV surge impacting on the service . This is mainly to cover General Paediatrics and a Speciality interest is not essential, but any interest that fits in with our department will be supported. This is an exciting opportunity to join our Trust, which was awarded NHS Foundation Trust status with effect from 1 April 2005.The department is increasing its commitment to medical student teaching, being seconded to the Trust from the University of Manchester. Considerable opportunities exist for research and development within the Trust and there are active and developing links with the Universities of Manchester and Central Lancashire.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a Locum Consultant Paediatrician.

This post is full-time (10 PAs) for a period of six months and is to start as early as possible. You will join a thriving and fully integrated Child Health Directorate comprising of 21.5 WTE Consultants, including 2 Paediatric Neurologists and 6 WTE Consultant Community Paediatricians. The post is based mainly at Royal Preston Hospital. There will be close working relationship with the Paediatric Neurologists and other Paediatricians.

The post holder will participate in general paediatric on call rota doing 1 in 10 non-resident on calls and Consultant of the week system. The post also includes an evening resident shift in the paediatric assessment unit (5 days in a 10 week cycle) working along with a junior and middle grade doctor. There is no responsibility for neonatal cover involved.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:To play a key role in the team , in particular supporting with winter pressures and RSV planning, and to continue to support and develop the service in conjunction with the service manager, clinical lead and other team membersTo assess and treat children and young people under the age of 16 years. This includes acute assessments and routine workThe post holder will be expected to actively engage in links with paediatricians in the acute Trusts, Primary Care Services, and other agencies relevant to theservices.

A key task would be to support pathways of care for young peoplerequiring short term admissions to the paediatric/acute medical wards fortreatment.The post holder will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their care, whilst undertaking administrative duties associated with patient care.To lead in pathways as indicated. Ensuring that clinical care provided to the service users is of a high quality and is provided within the Trusts policy framework.The post holder will be an active member of the multidisciplinary team, andtherefore attend multidisciplinary team meetingsThe post holder may expect to work with a multi-ethnic populationThe post holders will not hold clinical responsibility for the clinical work ofother disciplines in the team.To show willingness to promote Audit and QI audit/QI project per yearEducation:Leadership:The post holder will form part of the local management groupManagement:This is not a formal management position, however as a consultant Paediatrician, the post holder is expected to:

Support the team manager in managing members of the multi-disciplinaryteam to ensure a high level of patient care and ensure patient safety.Address all areas of clinical governance within the multidisciplinary team. The components of clinical governance include: Education and Training, Clinical Audit, Clinical effectiveness, Research and Development, Openness and Risk Management.

  • More than five years of experience working at middle grade level in general paediatrics
  • Experience in safeguarding medicals and report writing

  • Experience in subspecialty to complement the departmental needs
  • Experience in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Substantive posts - Must be entered on the Specialist Register (or entry within 6 months)
  • MRCPCH
Desirable
  • A higher qualification, e.g. MD PhD
