Job overview

  • Consultant in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery with a special interest in head and neck oncology and reconstruction.
  • The post-holder will be responsible for the delivery of high quality Maxillo Facial Surgical patient services, including elective and emergency, outpatient, day-case and inpatient management.

Main duties of the job

  • Delivery of high quality Maxillo Facial Surgical patient services, including elective and emergency, outpatient, day-case and inpatient management.
  • Prioritising patient lists for outpatient appointments and admissions within the nationally defined targets.
  • Junior staff: Recruitment, appointment and educational supervision including educational contracts, regular appraisal, organisation of study leave, annual leave and rotas.
  • Work collaboratively with the operations director and director of nursing on budget issues

Working for your organisation

  • The department provides a hub and spoke model of care and this new post is to join a team of 5 other consultants based at William Harvey Hospital which is the main hub. The unit covers the full remit of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within the region of East Kent. Postholder will be encouraged to develop further sub specialist interest as part of general OMFS commitment in addition to Head and Neck Oncology interest. On call commitment will be 1 in 6 with a full middle tier support.
  • The department is moving towards being fully digital with a model scanner, an intra-oral scanner, facial scanner and Dolphin software. There is a state-of-the-art Maxillofacial Laboratory situated on the floor above the clinical area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Development of further specialist interests as part of general OMFS commitment in addition to Head and Neck Oncology and reconstruction sub specialty interest.
  • Teaching: As well as teaching and training our orthodontic trainees the successful applicant will be involved in teaching DCT1 and DCT2 trainees and occasionally junior doctors, medical students, nurses and other paramedical staff in the team in speciality and special interest.
  • On Call Arrangements: The on-call commitment will be as 3rd on call on a 1 in 6 non resident Consultant rota for the whole of the East Kent NHS Trust area. This is supported with a 2nd on call middle tier rota (non resident) with registrars and staff grades on a 1 in 6 basis with DCTs providing the 1st on-call level.
