The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is currently recruiting a full-time, Locum Consultant based in the Medical Department at the Munster Regional Transfusion Centre (MRTC) and includes onsite practice each Friday, at Mercy University Hospital, Cork.

This locum Consultant post will provide backfill for the Consultant Haematologist currently acting as Clinical Lead Advisor Transfusion Services to September 2022. The purpose of the role is to provide medical management and leadership of the medical team and support in Transfusion medicine which includes advice on component application, Immunohaematology service (routine and reference) with specialist support for complex cases, transfusion reaction investigation for the region and haemovigilance. There is also active follow up of ante-natal patients with red cell and platelet antibodies. Our Therapeutic Apheresis service supports Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital and Bon Secours Hospital, Cork. This service is mainly therapeutic plasma exchange and in the past two years has also supported red cell exchange for sickle cell disease.

The Cork medical team includes: Consultant haematologist; 5 Specialist Medical staff (3WTE); SpRs who rotate on a three monthly basis during the year from CUH/MUH and; the team is supported by 3 RGNs and medical administration staff. There is an on call commitment (1 in 2) with this post.

Essential Criteria:

  • Registration to the Irish Medical Council or proof of eligibility.

Desirable Criteria:

  • CCT or equivalent evidence of completion of training in haematology, on the Irish Medical Council Specialist Register
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a cross functional team

The salary attached to the post will be in line with the Irish Department of Health Consolidated Pay Scales. Entry point onto the salary scale is dependent upon relevant experience.
