Every Kind of Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and enthusiastic rheumatologist to join Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust as a consultant based in the Kellgren Centre at its Manchester Royal Infirmary site. This is a rare opportunity to help shape the specialty in the country’s largest NHS Trust.

Whatever you’re looking for in your next career move, you’ll find it all at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Bringing together hospitals and community services from across Manchester and beyond, we’re pooling our knowledge, skills and resources to provide even better care for the diverse communities of our thriving city region. MFT is the largest Foundation Trust in the country and as such means more opportunities for you. With comprehensive services and strong research links, you can advance your specialism, progress your career, and take your knowledge further. We want talented people from all backgrounds to choose to join our diverse teams, and so we’ll support your work-life balance with flexible and agile working options. And, with the best of both inner city and country living on our doorstep, you can enjoy a better quality of life too.

So why not start your next step and take the best career move and join us in our iconic hospital formed since 1752. Manchester Royal Infirmary is a 750-bed teaching hospital situated next door to one of the country’s largest medical schools providing ample opportunities for those with an interest in medical education or research. MRI recently underwent a major management and service reconfiguration which has provided opportunity for significant investment in its medical services, so you’ll have a huge role to play in shaping our future.

The Role

The Kellgren Centre for Rheumatology provides a local secondary care rheumatology service to central Manchester (approx 200,000 people). In addition, The Kellgren Centre provides a regional and tertiary referral service for several key rheumatological conditions including connective tissue disease and vasculitis (specialist commissioned), Behcet’s syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, and seronegative spondyloarthropathies. There is also a strong clinical interest in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in inflammatory arthritis, and a regional yttrium synovectomy service.

The trust has been awarded a centre of excellence status by Lupus UK based on the quality of its services in the clinical management of lupus and related disorders as well as the patient focused services that it provides.

In addition to a specialist lupus and connective tissue disease clinic that is delivered currently by several consultants (Prof Bruce, Dr Gorodkin, Dr Ho, Dr Parker) there are also specialist shared clinics including a high risk pregnancy clinic (shared with Dr Clare Tower, Consultant in Fetal and Maternal Medicine), young adult clinics (shared with Dr Phil Riley and Dr Alice Cheing consultant paediatric rheumatologists) and an advanced therapy-biologics clinic for connective tissue disease (Prof. Bruce, Dr Parker).

The service also includes a weekly renal MDT, a monthly multidisciplinary meeting with nephrology and immunology, a multidisciplinary meeting with respiratory medicine, and a monthly Behcet’s multidisciplinary meeting. There are fortnightly radiology meetings and weekly educational meetings.

About You

Resilient, ambitious, and innovative, you’ll carry a vibrant ‘can do’ attitude and mirror our values perfectly, with the skill and flexibility to operate at a high pace and overcome individual and organisational obstacles readily, positively, and collaboratively.

You will be highly enthusiastic individual who is fully trained and confident in all aspects of rheumatology with a track record or ambition for leadership of the NHS clinical specialty. The role will also support the wider duties of our service in site-specific multi-disciplinary team meetings, on-call, in-reach consult services and both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

The ability to work flexibly in conjunction with the wider team, including clinical academic members from the University of Manchester, is an essential part of the role. An indicative job plan is provided but can be reviewed on successful appointment to shape the role appropriately.  Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is very supportive of individual development and believes strongly in investing in staff. Special interests and self-development will be encouraged and incorporated in the job plan where possible. Candidates who have or are seeking to develop a specialist interest in CTD and/or vasculitis would be particularly welcome.

We are looking for the appointee to take an active role in the on-going development of services, driving forward improvements in quality of care, and to uphold the Trust values and behaviours always. As a minimum, applicants must hold, or expect to hold within 6 months of interview, CCT in Rheumatology, or recognised equivalent, and must hold full registration with the GMC. With its unique opportunities the post should be attractive to established consultants looking for a nationally distinctive role. The post is available with immediate effect.

At MFT, it’s ‘All Here For You’ as it is for our patients, so join us and share our vision to be the very best. So, if you have the skills, knowledge and experience, we would love to hear from you. For informal enquiries please contact Dr Rachel Gorodkin via email; Rachel.Gorodkin@mft.nhs.uk or telephone; 0161 276 4628 and Dr Ben Parker via email; Ben.Parker@mft.nhs.uk or telephone; 0161 276 7936.
