Job Details

Gross basic salary: £47,103.96 - £77,821.59 (dependent on experience)

10 PAs with no on-call commitment

Fixed-term Contract – 1 year

Situated just 40 minutes by plane from London with excellent transport links to the whole of the UK & Europe, the beautiful island of Jersey - a British Crown Dependency - enjoys excellent weather, spectacular natural beauty, a low burden of taxation, excellent primary and secondary school education, and a healthy work-life balance. An exciting opportunity has arisen for the successful applicant to relocate to our Island for 12 months, with accommodation provided by the hospital. The successful candidate may of course re-apply for the same position after 12 months.

Our eye department offers general and sub-specialist services to our population including sub-specialist surgery in oculoplastics, surgical retina, and cornea. The successful applicant will join a team of 3 consultants, an Associate Specialist, 2 orthoptists, 2 Clinical Nurse Specialists and several further members of nursing and support staff. We benefit from a world-class standard of equipment, both in clinic and theatre.

Each Cataract fellow will have at least 2 (and hopefully 3) timetabled theatre lists each week with a consultant, with no other trainees present in theatre. (A previous post-holder here achieved 150 complete phacoemulsification cases in 18 months, starting as a beginner.) Surgical progress will naturally be dependent on ability, skillset and previous experience. The experience gained during this role may of course count towards future CESR application or promotion into the new Specialist grade. The remaining timetable will be in eye clinic, delivering general ophthalmology outpatient work including glaucoma, medical retina, eye casualty and laser sessions. The successful candidate is likely to have at least 2 years' experience in general ophthalmology and be comfortable with slit-lamp usage and interpretation of basic diagnostics including OCT scans.

Full travelling expenses are paid from a UK port of entry, and the appointee may be able to take advantage of Jersey taxation policies. Under Jersey Law, applicants must possess FULL registration with the General Medical Council and hold a licence to practise.

The Government of Jersey is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable people (to include children) and requires all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. As this position will work with vulnerable people, the selection process will involve safeguarding measures and include an enhanced DBS check.

If you would like to discuss the post informally or arrange a visit (virtual or in person) please contact: Mr Anish Shah – Clinical Lead, telephone 01534 444215 or email A.Shah@health.gov.je

Closing date Friday 27th August 2021.
