Ref: MS12054931

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant General Surgeon based in Raigmore, fixed term for 1 year.

The successful applicant will have a broad experience of general and gastrointestinal surgery that complements the subspecialty interests that currently exist within this cohesive department, and that supports NHS Highland’s commitment to improving waiting times for elective surgical care. It is our vision that this post will support and enhance the surgical services delivered across NHS Highland, to the benefit of patients served by the Belford, Raigmore and Caithness General Hospitals.

This will be on a full time basis of 10PAs, with 2EPAs available and will be expected to participate in the on-call rota on a 1:11 basis.

The General Surgical Service is supported by new and excellent ITU/HDU facilities; a radiology department with modern cross sectional imaging with two CT scanners and two MRI scanners;  endoscopy unit and theatres with full range of laparoscopic equipment. Raigmore Hospital is one of the five cancer centres in Scotland. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and neo-adjuvant chemoradiation are administered on site. The colorectal MDT sees >200 new cancer diagnoses each year. We have separate pelvic floor and inflammatory bowel disease MDTs. Complex surgery including ileoanal pouch formation for inflammatory bowel disease and exenterative surgery for recurrent rectal cancer is done locally here at Raigmore. Likewise laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy and sacral nerve stimulation are available locally for patients with pelvic floor disorders. We are a highly active research unit; projects include biomarker discovery, telemedicine apps, clinical trials, simulation in training, clinical education and we recruit to a high proportion of current colorectal clinical trials.

The Department of General Surgery and Urology comprises of consultant general surgeons with special interests covering, colorectal, endocrine, upper GI/HPB, vascular and paediatric surgery. In addition, there are three oncoplastic breast consultants providing the breast reconstruction service, and five consultant urologists. There are visiting paediatric, plastic and neurosurgical consultant staff. The team are supported by three full time colorectal nurse specialists and two research nurses. Junior staff consists of one staff grade surgeon, three research fellows, eight specialist trainees and nine FY1s between General Surgery and Urology.
