The Respiratory inpatient bed base includes a dedicated 32-bed Respiratory high care unit and there are close working relationships with Critical Care alongside specialist Respiratory physiotherapy and nursing staff.  The care provided to patients with COVID-19 has helped develop and expand our Respiratory High Care Unit with both local and national recognition of the pivotal role the Respiratory team played in supporting patients with respiratory failure.

Consultant in respiratory medicine with a specialist interest in asthma

The asthma service has expanded significantly over the past few years. It is currently run by one respiratory consultant with support from the respiratory nurse specialist team who provide nurse led asthma and biologic clinics. We are also looking to begin ILO investigations and using SMART inhalers to monitor adherence. Our specialist physiotherapist provides a dysfunctional breathing clinic. An extensive lung function service is available to support asthma diagnostics and regular MDTs are held within the Trust and with North Bristol Trust. We are recognised as a severe asthma service together with the North Bristol Trust (NBT) asthma team. We are part of the South West Asthma Network. Regular MDTs are held within the Trust and with North Bristol Trust.

There is a daily respiratory HOT clinic staffed in rotation by the respiratory consultant team, together with support from the Respiratory Nurse Specialist Team.
