Are you a passionate and forward thinking Consultant Psychiatrist looking to work within one of the best performing CAMHS Services in the Country?
- 10 PA Role (open to part time applications)

We are excited to offer this fantastic opportunity for you to join our supportive, experienced and multi-disciplinary team. In Somerset CAMHS, waiting times are amongst the lowest nationally; for both the percentage of young people seen within 6 weeks and also the percentage waiting over 18 weeks. CAMHS Benchmarking Project Report (2017/8) also showed that caseload levels per heard of population and per clinical WTE are amongst the lowest. We have also recently launched self-referrals of 16-17 year olds directly to the service.
You will be joining a fully established team, with a low staff turnover, where you will receive a high level of support from the surrounding team, the senior leadership team and also the wider Trust. The CAMHS West Community team includes approximately 19 WTE clinicians. Somerset CAMHS is made up of a range of community and specialist teams including; Single Point of Access, Community Teams, Wessex House Inpatient, Enhanced Outreach/Home Treatment Team, CAMHS Liaison, Community Eating Disorder Service, National Deaf CAMHS, Forensic CAMHS and Tier 2.5 Service.
You will be coming into a 10 PA post (part time working applications are welcomed) which will include 1.5 SPAs for core SPA activities, with up to an additional 1PA medical leadership role. The medical leadership role includes the development of neuro developmental (Autism, ADHD, LD) pathways across all of CAMHS Somerset.
Within this role you will have the opportunity to further develop and shape the service as we continue to look at how we can improve the service further. We are looking for someone who can hold risk, formulate ideas, and enjoys creative thinking. You will be involved in clinical leadership working closely with the management team within CAMHS. You will be actively involved in medical education, and will have the opportunity to delivering training examining medical students from University of Bristol and University of Plymouth Peninsula. There will be the opportunity for you to supervise Core Trainees in Psychiatry. If you are looking to further develop your career there is the opportunity for you to become a Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP), and we are prepared to create a training programme to help you reach this.
This role will be bespoke for you, and can include mentoring, coaching and training as decided during the application process and within your individual job plan. The role also attracts an additional, optional, 1.25PA and 3% supplement for out of hours all age on call rota, approximately 1 in 10.
You will be based at Foundation House in Taunton, working alongside our CAMHS consultant colleague who covers Taunton. You will cover the West of Somerset, which will see you working in scenic coastal areas.
Although this role will be well suited to an experienced CAMHS Community Consultant, we are in a position to be able to support someone transitioning into this role. You may be an experienced Adult Community Consultant Psychiatrist, looking to make a change in the direction of your career. You could also be a newly qualified consultant, or within 6 month of your CCT. As a Trust we have a group of senior coaches and mentors that can support you in your new post, particularly if you are within your first 5 years of achieving your CCT, this is in line with the RCPSYCH Start Well Programme.
We are expecting that you will be approved as a Responsible Clinician, or that you will be prepared and committed to undertake training to obtain Section 12(2) MHA/ Approved Clinical, and you also be expected to renew the annually.
About Somerset NHS Foundation Trust
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is the first NHS trust on the English mainland to provide community, mental health and acute hospital services. We work with health and social care partners in Somerset to ensure that we deliver outstanding services that meet the needs of our population.
We are delighted to announce that in November 2020 Somerset FT was shortlisted for the mental health trust of the year award in the widely acclaimed HSJ Awards. It follows a series of initiatives that we’ve introduced that have changed the way we develop and plan our mental health services – by listening to and involving patients themselves. The HSJ judges said they were looking for trusts which offer excellent, patient-centric care built on strong engagement between clinicians within and beyond the organisation.
