Job Details

Full Time Consultant in Medical Oncology: Breast and Urology [including Germ Cell] tumour sites.

The post is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary with some clinics and MDTs at Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General Hospital or on MS Teams, but provides advice across the whole Trust and for the community. UHL has a comprehensive trials unit and delivers all the up to date cutting edge treatments.

This post will give the candidate an excellent opportunity to be part of our Breast and Urology Oncology services: UHL has one of the biggest breast cancer services in the country, seeing 800-900 new breast cancers annually. Breast oncology is a very well established department with research embedded in daily working. There is opportunity to develop services and research with support from the established departments of both clinical and medical oncology. There is a busy portfolio of clinical trials which the post holder would be expected to take part in as co-investigator and develop their clinical research as principal investigator.

UHL acts as the specialist "hub" of a wide Urological MDT that includes Leicestershire & Rutland, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. This allows excellent communication and teamwork across specialities with opportunities to develop services and access a wide population for research purposes. As medical oncologists we work closely with our clinical oncology colleagues to support provision of treatments and have worked together to help develop wider aspects of patients care (e.g. PSMA PET imaging in Leicester). Germ Cell cancers are managed supra-regionally and the germ cell MDT is very active and supportive. UHL has a dynamic germ cell tumour practice and the post holder will be supported by an excellent team consisting of Urologists, Germ cell CNS team, TYA CNS team and chemotherapy specialist pharmacists. Clinical trials and research participation is strongly encouraged.

The Oncology Department offers a comprehensive service to these groups of patients including chemotherapy, targeted agents, complex IMRT and stereotactic treatments. The treatment of all cancers is becoming increasingly complex with an increase in the options of radiotherapy and systemic therapies available. With more and more treatments available, the activity continues to increase and this requires the addition of a new consultant colleague to maintain this service and we therefore require an additional post in Medical Oncology.

UHL has strategic objectives which include building a world class reputation in research, education and training relevant to the diverse population in Leicester, delivering an excellent patient experience and ensuring UHL is fit for purpose. UHL has recently successfully bid to host the East Midlands Radiotherapy Network.

UHL's purpose is to deliver "Caring at its best" for all the people who visit Leicester's hospitals, either as patients, the public or as staff. As one of the largest and busiest teaching hospitals, our vision is to move from where we are now to where we want to be and the Trust's newly published Quality Strategy is called "Becoming the Best".

In becoming part of our team you too can show your commitment to the delivery of high quality services to patients with our Trust values.
