Locum Consultant Physician in Palliative Medicine

Based in Roxburghe House Specialist Palliative Care Unit, Dundee and Ninewells Hospital, Dundee 9PAs (with on-call)

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join the Tayside Palliative Care Team.  This is a locum appointment based in Roxburghe House, Dundee and Ninewells Hospital, Dundee to start as soon as possible for a 6 month period.

This post represents an exciting opportunity to work within both the specialist palliative care in-patient unit and the acute hospital setting as part of the dynamic Tayside wide Palliative Care Service.

Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service

NHS Tayside serves a population of approximately 415,000 people over the local councils of Perth and Kinross (151,000), Dundee (148,000) and Angus (116,000). It also accommodates patients from North East Fife (74,000). It is a large geographical area with its population scattered over an area of approximately 100 miles by 80 miles. Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service aims to provide quality care appropriate to location [home, palliative care unit, nursing home or hospital] and level of complexity. Education and telephone advice for all health professionals are core activities of the service. The Tayside Specialist Palliative Care Service is hosted within the Dundee Health and Social Care Partnership but operates across four main clinical hubs:

Angus Specialist Palliative Care Service, Ninewells Specialist Palliative Care Service and Perth and Kinross Specialist Palliative Care Service, Roxburghe House & Dundee Specialist Palliative Care Service

Roxburghe House is a 20-bed purpose-built NHS specialist palliative care unit in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Jedburgh Road, Dundee. It is situated approximately one mile from Ninewells Hospital and Medical School and serves the populations of Dundee and Angus. 

Specialist Palliative Care in Dundee

In addition to 20 in-patient beds, day services and out-patient clinics, the Dundee Macmillan Nursing team and Education Centre are also based at Roxburghe House.

The Ninewells Palliative Care Service consists of an advisory service and a unique 3 bed Acute Palliative Care In-patient Unit. Ninewells is a large University teaching hospital, which includes all main specialties. In addition, Ninewells hosts the Regional Cancer Centre, the Medical School and the Postgraduate Centre, the new Cancer Research Facilities of the University of Dundee and benefits from the presence of the Maggies Centre in the grounds which provides support for patients with cancer.

The successful applicant will work closely with both the Roxburghe House and Ninewells teams comprising a total of 4 consultant colleagues across both of these sites, and will also work collaboratively with 2 consultant colleagues based in Cornhill Macmillan Centre, Perth and Kinross.

Other medical team members at Roxburghe House include experienced specialty doctors, a rotational specialty trainee (total of 3 specialty trainees across Tayside), 2 FY1 doctors and a GPST. As well as medical input, the extensive multidisciplinary team includes a clinical co-ordinator, inpatient nursing staff, day care services, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, pharmacist, bereavement support worker, volunteer manager, complementary therapies coordinator, chaplain and service manager.

Other medical members of the Ninewells Hospital HPCT include specialty doctors and a rotational specialty trainee, in addition, the enthusiastic multidisciplinary team comprises clinical nurse specialists, pharmacist and chaplain.

On call for weekends and weeknights is non-resident with availability supplement. Frequency is pro-rata and is approximately 1:6. There are fixed weekend ward round sessions job planned at the same frequency.

Within the wider NHS Tayside Palliative Care Service there are a number of innovative developments taking place, in particular the recent launch of the Macmillan Tayside Managed Clinical Network for Palliative and End of Life Care which includes sub-groups of Education, Research / Quality Improvement, End of Life Care, Audit / Data Collection and Non-Cancer Palliative Care .  Other initiatives include: an Acute Palliative Care Unit (3 beds) based in Ninewells Hospital, a Renal Supportive Care service, the ECHO (Enhanced Community Healthcare Outcomes) education project, a Dementia QI Project in collaboration with Health Improvement Scotland, a Master of Public Health (Palliative Care Research) Course and research links with the University of Dundee.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and have CCT or CESR in Palliative Medicine.
