Consultant Psychiatrist - Home Treatment Team

This is an exciting consultant post in general adult psychiatry with a dynamic home treatment team (HTT) in South London. The role is full-time with 7 DCC and 3 SPA sessions, and includes a rare opportunity to allocate two SPAs towards an academic affiliate programme at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London (KCL).

The affiliate programme is open-ended (subject to annual review) and is for consultants who are keen to gain experience in academic research. Short-listed candidates who are interested in the programme will have the opportunity to discuss this with the Vice Dean of Research at the IoPPN, and if appointed they will have an honorary contract with KCL in addition to their substantive SLAM contract.

Croydon HTT looks after men and women with severe mental disorders who are aged 18 to 65 years and are staying in Croydon. Most patients are taken on from community mental health teams, crisis services (such as A&E) or from the local acute inpatient wards. It is a large multi-disciplinary team with around 30 clinical staff and an average caseload of 45 patients, for whom the post-holder holds consultant responsibility. There is also part-time higher psychiatric trainee and a full-time junior doctor. The consultant has a separate office with networked PC and access to administrative support.

The team is based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, a large site with extensive grounds that includes a number of forensic, CAMHS and national specialist services, some of which have featured on national TV. The nearest rail station is Eden Park (with direct trains from Waterloo East and London Bridge), which is around a 15 minute walk from the Bethlem. There is free staff car-parking on site, and also direct buses from East Croydon station (approx. 20mins travel time).
