Consultant in Emergency Medicine

The University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is one of, the largest Trusts in the UK for delivering Emergency Care. By applying to work at our hospitals at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Heartlands and Good Hope you will be joining a consultant team with over 150 years of joint experience in delivering Emergency Care, with a wide range of special interests.  Our people are our focus. We are a driven, passionate and supportive team, working together to deliver the best care possible for our patients.

Across the three sites we see approximately 350,000 patients a year with Queen Elizabeth as the trauma centre site, with many tertiary specialist services such as neurosurgery and transplant services, Heartlands Hospital functioning as: a Trauma Unit; site for Primary PCI services; and offering advanced Tertiary Thoracic and Vascular services. Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands and Good Hope sites are supported by: advanced, newly-refurbished Resuscitation Rooms; GP in ED services; Rapid Assessment and Treatment services; and supporting ambulatory care and frailty units. Heartlands and Good Hope have separate Paediatric Emergency Department areas with specialist Childrens’ nursing teams.

As part of a large team, consultants are able to work flexibly to balance work and home life. Our job plans are annualised and offer great flexibility with consultants able to pursue special interests outside emergency care which have included: establishing hospital units abroad; Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine, working at other Trusts & organisations; medico-legal work and working within the media.

We are learning every day. We have high quality training programmes, research, audits and quality improvement projects running across the department. As a department we pride ourselves on innovation with recent examples such as the HECTOR project paving the way for Silver Trauma Care and receiving recognition in the CRN awards and the 2018 BMJ Awards.

Come to Birmingham and you will see a real diversity of lifestyles. Whether you like the rural life and the pursuit of outdoor interests or prefer inner city living, Birmingham has everything to offer.

As the second-largest city in the UK, you’ll find that Birmingham’s vibrant culture is ever-changing through ongoing regeneration, renewal and grand-scale construction. So whatever your tastes, hobbies or lifestyle, Birmingham has something to offer.

Working in our Emergency Department is fast-paced, challenging and always interesting. Everyone’s voice is valued to harness ideas for innovation and we are always looking at how we can improve. We look forward to welcoming you to our team.

University of Birmingham ImagesUniversity Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national and international population.

It includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic. We also run a number of smaller satellite units, allowing people to be treated as close to home as possible.

We see and treat more than 2.2 million people every year across our sites and our hospitals deliver more babies than anywhere else in Europe.

We are a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal dialysis, burns and plastics, HIV and AIDS, as well as respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis. We also have expertise in premature baby care, bone marrow transplants and thoracic surgery and have the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe.

We provide a series of highly specialist cardiac, liver and neurosurgery services to patients from across the UK.

We are world-renowned for our trauma care and have developed pioneering surgical techniques in the management of ballistic and blast injuries, including bespoke surgical solutions for previously unseen injuries. As a result of its clinical expertise in treating trauma patients and military casualties, the QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK’s only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC).

We have over 20,000 members of staff and we are committed to investing in their development and their health and wellbeing.

UHB is a Stonewall Diversity Champion and aims to achieve positive change for LGBTQ+ people by creating an inclusive, inspiring and equal environment for both staff and service users.
